Jun-11-03
 | | Honza Cervenka: Karpov's classic. |
Jun-11-03 | | drukenknight: so how is it supposed to end? |
Jun-11-03 | | mkdir: karpovs way of taking the a-file is excellent |
Jun-11-03 | | Calli: <drukenknight> white threatens Ng4 and Black can't defend f6, h6 or b5 (after Ra5). |
Jun-11-03
 | | Sneaky: 27.Ba7!! is a great positional tactic. The rook on a8 is completely immobilized. Also, check out that sad knight which gets stranded on b7 for most of the game. It can't move because of Karpov's pawns, except to d8--but from d8 it has nowhere to go, either. I've never seen a knight incarcerated quite like that before. |
Jun-11-03 | | maa: A very good positionnal game I like the way that Karpov improve is position slowly. Unzicker was all stuck because of the pawn of Karpov . This is beautiful |
Jun-11-03
 | | Sneaky: <threatens Ng4> or if Black trades Queens 44...Qxg6 45.fxg6 then he can't stop White from playing the super-strong Nf5 |
Jun-12-03 | | drukenknight: I dont think trading Qs will do what about: 44...Qf7 to create a spot for the N on e8? |
Oct-15-03 | | skakmiv: If 44...Qf7 then Ng4 perhaps? |
Dec-26-04 | | Jafar219: What a press by Karpov! |
Apr-05-05 | | mack: This used to be Nigel Short's favourite game, not sure if it still is. |
May-02-05 | | sfm: 40 moves exchanging only one pawn! Could be a record. |
Oct-18-05 | | n30: why not 40: Bxh5? |
Oct-18-05
 | | perfidious: <n30> 40....Bxh5 doesn't change things, really-time isn't at all important in this type of position, and after 41.Qxh5, White can continue as in the game; Black's pieces are hopelessly constricted. |
Jan-03-06 | | Chopin: This is a classic! |
Jan-31-06 | | Tariqov: Karpov trades of his bad bad bishop for Blacks good Bishop. good technique by Karpov.Ba7! |
Mar-17-06 | | dakgootje: Very nice tactically played where about the whole position is closed as the pawns block each other, black has little room to move and white has the only open file. Great game! |
Mar-17-06 | | JustAFish: Has anyone else noticed that Herr Unzicker always seems to have been immortalized on the wrong side of "Classic" games? Great, unlucky, man. Petrosian vs Unzicker, 1960 Unzicker vs Fischer, 1962 Tal vs Unzicker, 1961 |
Mar-17-06 | | Chuckles: Yes, and I think in general a requirement for brilliant games is that the loser is a very good player, so it takes a brilliancy to beat them. If Karpov had been playing a lesser player, then probably he wouldn't have needed the clever bishop move, as he would have been winning already anyway. |
Mar-17-06 | | fadaly3000: why did unzicker resigned?it doesnt make sense |
Mar-17-06 | | devilwolfdog: He resigned because he had a root canal scheduled and he thought that would be a little more pleasant than playing this position as black. |
Sep-14-06 | | technical draw: He resigned so he could take the bishop on a7 and throw it across the room! |
Nov-13-06 | | aazqua: How can this game possibly have less than a page of kibbitz? Karpov is so underappreciated. |
Dec-04-06 | | WarmasterKron: A lovely game. I thought knights were supposed to be good in closed positions, but Unzicker's are the most useless I've ever seen. |
Jan-06-07 | | Nibiru: Why 13...Nd8 in stead of Nb8? |
