An Englishman: Good Evening: CG has 6 games in which Guimard played "his" defense to the French, with 5 losses and this one lucky win. Anyone know of any additional games?
May-22-12  optimal play: The current CG.com stats now have his score at 2/9

A win with his first attempt in 1941 then 7 straight losses until this game, which looks like it was the last time he played it.

He didn't seem to have much luck with his namesake defence but he was certainly persistent. Maybe that's why it was named after him?

Fusilli: Black didn't have compensation for the piece, but White muddled his own game. After 28...g6 White is oblivious to the danger.

He should have played 29.Kg3 but walked right into Black's plan wit 29.Nbd2? Black followed with 29...Qh1+ 30.Kg3 Rg1!

Now if 31.Nxg1 Qxg2+ and 32...Qg5#. White had to urgently walk up with the king now (31.Kf4), but the tables had turned and Black would have been clearly better. Instead, White hopelessly tries to kill the bishop with 31.Rc7, which allows 31...g5 and the mating net is lethal.

Nice finish.
