An Englishman: Good Evening: First things first--someone here likes Elmore Leonard.

As for the game--it becomes more and more astonishing as it proceeds. White sacrifices a piece largely for the square f5, allows the exchange of Queens, regains the lost material, sacrifices anew, and then gains a position where he can loiter, play g3 and Kg2 (intending Kf3) and Black can do nothing. Brilliant.

Teyss: I thought "What a lame pun" and then saw "Granda" in the first player's name. Half-lame pun. Great game.

For the youngest users here, Hoogovens steel company (literally high ovens) was the original sponsor of the tournament. It became part of Corus Group in 1999 and was bought by Tata Steel in 2007, hence the different tournament names.

Aug-23-23  goodevans: Surely the whole point of <36...Rh5> was that <37.h4> could be met with <37...Nxe4> attacking White's N and R simultaneously.

I'm sure that's what 'Shorty' would originally have had in mind so I wonder what happened to change that.

If White then tries the same tricks then after <38.Rg8+ Kxg8 39.Nxe7+ Kf8 40.Nxc8 Nxf2> White can't recapture <41.Kxf2> because of <41...Nd3+>.

A most interesting game to play through.

Honza Cervenka: The game was interesting but 37...Nh7?? was a howler. Also 36...f6 could have been better than 36...Rh5.
Aug-23-23  jffun1958: Nice finish featuring R sac and N fork.

HeMateMe: Is it possible to correlate GOD puns with John Travolta movies used? And, who would want to do such a thing? Hopefully no one.
