Aug-13-05  ughaibu: 22.Rc5 a nice way to activate the rook.

  Chessical: A very nice touch from Geller, <22...Qxc5? 23.Qe6 mate>. Bandza would have been no better off after:

<23...Bxc5> 24.Nf6+ Qxf6 25.exf6 Rxe1+ 26.Nxe1 Nce5 27.Qe6+

Aug-14-05  ughaibu: Would 18....d3 have been any good?

  Chessical: <ughaibu> Geller would have had more difficulty after <18...d3!?>, but I believe he would still have won:

<19.Rxc6> Qxc6 20.e6+;

(a)<20...Kf6> gets mated after: 21.Nh5+ Kg6 22.Ne5+ Kxh6 23.Nf7+ Kg6 24.Qxd3+ Kxh5 25.Qf5+ Kh4 26.g3 mate.

(b)<20...Kg8> 21.Ne5 Qd6 22.Qh5 Bxe6 23.Nf5 d2 24.Rd1 winning after Nc6.

Aug-14-05  ughaibu: Looks convincing.
Sep-20-12  whiteshark: Bandzai!
Jan-12-21  Gaito: This game seems like a typical case of "chess master versus chess amateur". Geller crushed his opponent very effortlessly, though at times it seemed that he was playing "cat-and-mouse" with him. The engine shows us at least a couple of moments where Geller might have won even faster. A few interesting moments:

White has sacrificed a piece, and now played a natural developing move: 18.Rc1. What could have been better? Stockfish 12 points out that 18.e6+! might have been even stronger. LcZero also prefers 18.e6+! as well. Let us see a sample variation: 18.e6+! Bxe6 19.Rc1 Bf6 20.Ng5+! Bxg5 21.Qh5+ Kg8 22.Nxe6 Nxe6 23.Rxe6 Qxe6 24.Qxg5+ Qg6 25.Qd5+ Qf7 26.Qxc6 Re8 27.h3 Qe6 28.Qb5 a6 29.Qg5+ Qg6 30.Qf4 and Black is busted (diagram).

Geller played 19.Qd3. The engine suggests the even stronger move 19.Ng5+! (evaluation by SF12: +9.24). For example: 19.Ng5+! Kg8 20.Nh5 Bxg5 21.Qg4 Qe6 22.Nf6+ Kf7 23.Qxg5 Ng6 24.f4 Bc8 25.Ne4 Qe7 26.Rxc6 Be6 27. f5 and mate in 11 moves (SF12). (Diagram)
