Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-18-21  Messiah: Not a beautiful game, but the middlegame considerations of both colours are interesting.

1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 g6 3.Bg5 Ne4 4.Bh4 Bg7 5.c3 c5 6.e3 b6 7.Nbd2 Nxd2 8.Qxd2 Bb7 9.d5 d6 10.e4 O-O 11.Bd3 a6

<I like 11...Ba6 here, getting rid of the bad bishop. If 12.c4, then 12...Qe8 is fairly obvious, and the battle is wide open.>

12.Rd1

<12.Bg5 with the idea of h4 seems to be more promising.>

12...Nd7 13.O-O Ne5

<I would play b5 and Re8 here, with the idea of c4 and a little bit later something like Qa5.>

14.Nxe5 dxe5 15.f4

<Bg5/Qe2/a4 is another viable idea.>

15...Qd6

<15...Bh6 is a pretty obvious way to fight for equality, where 16.Bg5 Bxg5 17.fxg5 Qd6 is not horrible for Black.>

16.f5 Bf6?!

<The immediate 16...c4 was necessary.>

17.Bg3?

<Not good. Bombarding the kingside with 17.Bxf6 exf6 18.Qh6 Kh8 19.Rf3 Rg8 (or whatever) 20.Rdf1 was visually and technically better, and White can press until eternity.>

17...gxf5?

<Inflicting a horrible structural damage for practically nothing. The c4-b5 idea or an immediate 17...Bc8 should have been done, with real hopes for a draw.>

18.Rxf5 Bc8 19.Rf2 Kh8?!

<Slow. Doing a Bd7 and a Bg7 with an f6 and/or b5 was somewhat better (I mean the draw is not completely impossible then), but I have no idea in which sequence they should be done.>

20.Rdf1 Rg8 21.Qh6 Bg4?

<In an already bad position Barbeau allows an exchange sac. 21...Bg5 22.Qxd6 exd6 23.Rxf7 Bg4 was necessary, and White is better, of course, but I cannot see an obvious way to convert.>

22.Rxf6

<Certainly! The rest is technicality.>

22...exf6 23.Rxf6 Qe7 24.Rxb6

<Even better was 24.d6 Qf8 25.Bxe5 Qxh6 26.Rxh6+ Rg7 27.Rh4, with a totally won position.>

24...Rg6 25.Rxg6 fxg6 26.Bh4 Qd6 27.Qg5 Bd7 28.Qf6+ Qxf6 29.Bxf6+ Kg8 30.Bxe5

<The queenside pawns are weak, and the passers are unstoppable without enormous loss of material.>
