Mar-05-06  waddayaplay: Pillsbury made some brilliant move in his life but here he messed up.
Jun-17-07  waddayaplay: This game is from the first cable chess match between Great Britain and the United States, that began on March 13, 1896. USA won 4.5 to 3.5.
Jul-02-09  Calli: 16.Ba3 and if 16...Rxf2? then 17.Rd4 Re2 18.Be6 wins

16...Rf6? wrong square. Pillsbury misses 17.Re1! with the threat of Be7+ which is why Blackburne's Rf6 was incorrect. After 17.Re1! Nd6 18.Rad1 Kc7 19.Re7 should win.

Pillsbury should probably also win with 22.Rxh7 but didn't like Nf4.

  Pawn and Two: <Calli> Another missed chance for Pillsbury was 19.Rxd7+ Kxd7 20.Rxe7+ Kd8 21.Rxg7 Rg6 22.Rxb7.

One continuation could be: 22...Rh6 23.Rg7 Rb8 24.Bb2 Ne4 25.f3 Nd6 26.Bc1 Rg6 27.Rxh7, with good winning chances for White.

GrahamClayton: 26. ♖cc7 was the major error, losing a piece.
Jan-03-23  shallowred: 26... Ra6! is a combination of 2 'Invisible' attacks: A Horizontal Attack by the Rook along with a Backward Attack by the Bishop. Either are not naturally noticed by Humans since we are wired to think of Attacks as forward-events. Our eyes face-forward, as all Predator's eyes do.
