fredthebear: 24.Qxh6 threatens to drop the Queen in for a backrank mate in two moves. Black closes the diagonal w/24...f5, so White brings up another piece for support with 25.Ng5. Black staves off mate again with 25...Bc3 (which is better than 25...f6).

White to move: 26.?

Oh, 26.h4 is rather useless as <HaydenB> suggests. White had a perpetual check draw by 26.Qh7+ Kf8 27.Qh6+ Kg8, etc. but Black may have instead chosen to interpose with 27...Bg7.

Leonid Stein played some well-known games in this tournament, finishing in sixth place after a playoff. The incomparable eighteen-year-old Robert James Fischer won the tournament without a loss against a strong Russian contingent.

Nov-10-24  g2Bishop: 6.Qh7+ Kf8 27.Qh6+ Bg7 -+
