Kibitzer's Corner
Nov-17-06  Calli: 34...Bb6! with the threat of Bc7+ leads to interesting complications.
Nov-17-06  slapwa: Calli: It does look interesting. White can't play 35. h7, Bc7+ 36 Rf4, Bxf4+ 37 Kg4, Rh1, so is his best 35. Kh2 (maybe with repetition?)
Nov-17-06  Calli: <slawa> 34...Bb6 35.Kh2 maybe 35...Ne5 and if the ♖ moves off the g-file then Kg8-Kh8 so perhaps 36.Rg7 Bc7 37.g3 Rf2+
Nov-17-06  slapwa: ran it through a not very good computer program. It wants to play 35. Rh4 which quickly fizzles out to a draw.

A very interesting situation.

<34...Bb6 35.Kh2 maybe 35...Ne5 and if the R moves off the g-file then Kg8-Kh8 so perhaps 36.Rg7 Bc7 37.g3 Rf2+>

And then if 38. Kh3 Nf3 39. h7 Rh2+ 40. Kg4 Ne5+ 41. Kf4, to my eye Black seems to be running out of checks and will soon have to give up his knight for the h-pawn.

<35. Rh4 which quickly fizzles out to a draw.>

On 34...Bb6 35. Rh4, what's suggested for Black to draw? For example 34...Bb6 35. Rh4 Bf2+ 36. Kh2 Bg1+ 37. Kh3 Bf2 38. g3, and Black looks to be in big trouble since White threatens both h7 and Rf4.

Apr-28-07  slapwa: 35. ..., Kg8 is the silicon move. The point seems to be that white can't usefully employ Rg4+ or h7+. The black king can stop the pawn, knight threats to f7 are met by ..., Ne5 and there are always bc7+/Rh1+ tricks around.
Dec-22-10  jmboutiere: 9...b5 much better than 9,,,Qd8
12...Bd6 better than 12...Nbd7
if 19...Bf6 than 20.Qe8 Re8 21.Re8 Kh7 22.Bf7 or Ne4 and white is much better

38....Kg8 39. h7+ Kh8 40. Rg4 and 41. Rg8#.

  beatgiant: <GrahamClayton> After 34...Bb6 35. Rh4, the engine here suggests <35...Bc7+> and gives a line starting as follows:

34...Bb6 35. Rh4 Bc7+ 36. Kh3 Kg8 37. Rg4+ Kh8 38.Ng3 Rf2 39.Bb3 Nc5 40.Bxf7 f5 41.Rg6 Kh7

White has nice looking kingside activity, but I'm not finding a way to strengthen the attack. Maybe that's why <slapwa> said it <quickly fizzles out to a draw>.
