Nov-19-02  refutor: can anyone see this game? it's coming up as blank for me. reading the annotations to the 1924 new york tournament, alekhine recommended the botvinnik system 5. ... dxc4 in response to 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 c6 5.Bg5 as in this game which continued 6. e4 b5 7. e5 h6 8.Bh4 g5 9.Nxg5 etc. as in Bogoljubow-H. Wolf, Carlsbad 1923. it's the "etc." that i'm interested in :)

Sneaky: I can see it in sjkbase but not in the default viewer.
Nov-19-02  refutor: thank you sneaky, i find the default viewer *very* picky...could it be because the pgn for this has two [EventDate : "?"]s?

[Event "Karlsbad"]
[Site "Karlsbad"]
[Date "1923-??-??"]
[EventDate "?"]
[Round "3"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]
[White "Ewfim Bogoljubow"]
[Black "Heinrich Wolf"]
[ECO "D39"]
[WhiteElo "?"]
[BlackElo "?"]
[PlyCount "105"]
[EventDate "?"]

chessgames.com: I've seen several games like this. I don't think the EventDate is the problem, but if you go over the PGN with a fine toothed comb you will usually find the error. Things to look for: ambiguous moves (e.g. Rf7 when R8f7 is required), using zero's instead of O's when castling, move numbers that are wrong or out of sequence, capture moves that don't have an "x", promotions that don't have an "=".

I'm looking at it now, and I'm stumped. You can see the PGN by clicking "view text" above.

  Peligroso Patzer: It certainly seems that Wolf missed his chances in this endgame. He probably could have won with 43...b3; for example: 44.Rxc5+ Ke4 45.Rxc4+ Kd3 46.Rb4 Kxc3 47.Rb7 b2 48.g6 a5 49.g7 Rg2 50.Rc7+ Kb3 51.Rb7+ Ka2–+.
