Jun-24-06  percyblakeney: <Gunsberg was rather like the little boy in the nursery rhyme, who had a curl in the middle of his forehead - when he was good he was very very good, but when he was bad he was horrid>

R.N. Coles on this game, quoted by Forster in his book on Burn.

This was one of the losses that cost Gunsberg first place in New York 1889 (1. Chigorin & Weiss 29, 3. Gunsberg 28.5, 4. Blackburne 27, 5. Burn 26).

Feb-08-10  backrank: Total opening desaster in the Berlin Defense of Ruy Lopez. However, Burn made a couple of very strong moves here. Black's first mistake, as it seems, was 7. ... Nd6 (7. ... d6 looks better to me). Strange, but from that move on it seems hard to improve on Black's game. 13. ... Re8 gives White the total domination of the e-file, but how can Black do better, with his hard-to-complete development on the Queen's wing? The finish is simple but lovely: After Nxc7 Black is unable to save the rook because of Qxd6!, exploiting the weakness of the back rank.
