offramp: 25.Nf3? This knight has been moving to and fro and Steinitz may have played this without too much thought.

25...Ne4! wins the exchange.

After that Steinitz, who had really been just shufflin his pieces around, decides to liven up the play. He plays 29.Qh5.

This leads to exchanges on d3, and after 33.Qg5, this position:

White is attacking both the black rook and the knight on e7. Mason seems to have been worried about 33...Rd7 34.Ng4, but that doesn't look very dangerous. 34...Rd1+ followed by ...Nf5 seems to cover all the important points in the kingside.

Mason gave back the exchange and left himself a pawn up. The rest of the game looks very difficult. I'll imagine that it was very tiring to play.

Oct-06-16  Aunt Jemima: Mason seemed to have such a crushing position but let it slip away. Steinitz didn't make it easy for black at all but I thought black should win.
Aug-07-18  RookFile: Absolutely. Mason should have won this one.
Sep-27-19  SymphonicKnight: It is a fascinating hard-fought battle, regardless of the result. Steinitz plays great and determined defense after losing the exchange.
Sep-27-19  SymphonicKnight: Mason made a serious mistake in playing 33...Rxd3? instead of 33...Rd7!
