Jul-07-05  Knight13: Hey man, White's got two pretty strong and useful bishops. They worked well!

26... Qh7? Seems to be the mistake Black made that lost the game. Also the move 23... g5?. ... g5 weakens the King side too much. Anyway after the brilliant move, 28. e5!!, Black is completly lost.

Nice game played by White. The final position is painful, man. Black's gonna lose the dang ol' queen for skinny "fat" reasons.

<26... Qh7? Seems to be the mistake Black made that lost the game.>

But how else can Black prevent the terrible threat of 27. Qg6+, for example 26...Be8 allows 27. Rxg4+.

I think Black has been in very serious trouble and maybe losing since at least move 17.

Maybe 17...Qe8 is a better try, hoping to keep the kingside closed and start the queenside counterplay.

For example, 17...Qe8 18. Ba1 b5 19. Rc1 Nc4!, and Black is still fighting.

Feb-25-08  wolfmaster: When Labby wants to attack, there is usually not a heckuva lot stopping him!
Feb-01-12  Knight13: 18... fxe5 is incorrect; ... dxe5 is better, keeping the Bishop on b2 behind walls. Which means that 17... Bd7 was more accurate.

jnpope: All major sources give this game as La Bourdonnais-McDonnell, but Murray suspects it to be misassigned:

"...internal evidence suggest that M., not L. opened and won game 80."
<A History of Chess>, H. J. R. Murray, Oxford 1913, p882

This is an opinion I share with Murray after looking at the "supporting evidence" (opening lines) and doing a computer analysis of the games in the sixth match I'm convinced this game should be McDonnell-La Bourdonnais.

Feb-13-22  Granny O Doul: I fear the Establishment has too much to lose in reassigning this game at this point. Imagine if it turned out that Morphy had actually played Black in the opera box game? Practically all of chess writing since then would have to be redone from scratch.
