Dec-26-21  drollere: a lot of variations follow from 27. Rxf7 Kxf7, 28. Qxh7+, but i had Rg7, 29. g6+ Kf8, 30. Qh8+ Rg8, 31. g7+ Ke8, 32. Qxg8+ Bf8, 33. gxf8=Q#

Dionysius1: Thank goodness in the line Bueno chose 33.Rg1+... is also good enough for a win. It's the best my creaking brain could come up with. Happy Christmas all!
Dec-26-21  Brenin: I had the same line as Dionysius1, followed by 33 ... Kf8 34 Qh6+ Kf7 35 Qh7+ Kf6 36 Rxg8 Rxg8 37 Bd4+ Ke6 38 Qxg8+ Kf5 39 Qd5+ and 40 Bxc5, but I wasn't sure that I had missed some better Black defence, or that White was winning at the end of this line.
Dec-26-21  raymondhow: First six moves played themselves, then I played 33.Bd4+ but that doesn't work apparently.
Dec-26-21  TeaChess: 37Qg5+ is soft, should play Rg6+ instead.
Dec-26-21  mel gibson: I saw the first ply straight away -
this is more a Friday puzzle.

Stockfish 14 says:

27. Rxf7

Dec-26-21  raymondhow: < mel gibson: I saw the first ply straight away this is more a Friday puzzle..>
I saw the first six plies, but didn't solve it.
Dec-26-21  newzild: <raymondhow>, <mel gibson>: I also saw 27 Rxf7 Kxg7 28. Qxh7+ but was unable to analyse it to a clear win.

As shown by the drawn result, it's not really enough just to see the first few moves.

Although 27. Rxf7 is the most obvious candidate, there are some other options aimed at mobilising the f5 pawn roller and/or opening lines against the Be7 - e.g. 27. Rd5.

Dec-26-21  stacase: The first two move in literally two seconds. Most of the next several were obvious. Best Sunday puzzle for me in a long long time.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Saw the same line as <Dionysius1>. 6/7 for this week; decent little holiday present to myself.
Dec-26-21  AlicesKnight: I found the first 4-5 white moves but, as with others (and no silicon pet), could not find a line of clear-cut advantage. An interesting version of the 'margin of a draw'.
Dec-26-21  Prosperus: 36. Qg6 was winning.

Teyss: Couldn't see where White went wrong so looked at SF. Up to move 36 the game makes sense for Black to stay afloat: he has to avoid Bd4+ and Bxc5 dis. ch. so if he moves otherwise he'll lose material with a worse position.

As said above 33.Rg1+ also wins but less so (+4.0 at 32 ply). On move 36 both Rg1+ and Qg6+ win.

The gap is on move 37 when White should have played Rg6+ (+11.4 at 38 ply) instead of Qg5+ (+2.6 at 47 ply) because it ends up Q+P vs R+N: 37.Rg6+ Ke5 38.f6+ Ke6 39.fxe7+ Kxe7 40.Rg7+. Other moves also lose.

White's second mistake was 38.f6+ allowing the BQ to come in. Instead Re1+ would have allowed to trade pieces (+2.0 at 32 ply). One line ends up R+5Ps vs R+3Ps: 38. Re1+ Ne4 39. Qg3+ Kd5 40. Qd3+ Kc6 41. Qxe4+ Kb6 42. Qxe7 Qxe7 43. Rxe7 Rf8.

After 38.f6+ White was struggling for a draw.

Dec-26-21  parch: Chose the sac 27.R:f7,

But preferred 37.Qg6+, or 37.Rg6+
to 37.Qg5+.

Dec-26-21  johnnydeep: Pretty obvious up to 32.Qh5+
Dec-26-21  agb2002: White has a pawn for a knight.

Black threatens Qxf5.

The black king is overloaded with the defense of f7 and h7. This suggests 27.Rxf7:

A) 27... Kxf7 28.Qxh7+ Rg7 (else 29.Qxg6 gets three connected passed pawns for the knight) 29.g6+

A.1) 29... Kf8 30.Qh8+ Rg8 31.g7+ Kf7 32.Qh5+ Kxg7 (32... Kf6 33.Bd4#; 32... Ke6 33.Bd4+ Ne4 34.Rxe4#) 33.f5 (33.Rg1+ Kf8 -33... Kf6 34.Kd4+ Ke6 35.Re1+ Ne4 36.Rxe4#- 34.Qh6+ Kf7 35.Qh7+ Ke6 36.Rxg8 Rxg8 37.Qxg8+ Kf5, unclear)

A.1.a) 33... Bf8 34.f6+ Kxf6 35.Bd4#.

A.1.b) 33... Bf6 34.Bh6+ Kh8 (34... Kh7 35.Bf8#) 35.Bg5+ Qh7 (35... Kg7 36.Qh6+ Kf7 37.Qxf6#) 36.Bxf6+ Rg7 37.Bxg7+ Kg8 (37... Kxg7 38.Re7+ wins) 38.Bh6, with two extra pawns and attack, must be winning.

A.1.c) 33... Rh8 34.Rg1+ Bg5 (34... Kf6 35.Bd4#; 34... Kf8 35.Qxh8+ Kf7 36.Qh5+ Kf6 -36... Kf8 37.Bh6#- 37.Bd4#) 35.Rxg5+ Kf8 (35... Kf6 36.Bd4+ Ke7 37.Rg7+ Kd8 38.Qxh8+ Qe8 39.Rg8 wins decisive material) 36.Qxh8+ Ke7 37.Rg7+ as in the previous subline.

A.1.d) 33... Rgf8 34.Bh6+ Kg8 (34... Kf6 35.Qg6#; 34... Kh8 35.Bxf8+ wins) 35.Rg1+ Bg5 36.Rxg5+ wins.

A.2) 29... Kf6 30.Bd4+ Kf5 31.Qh5+ Kxf4 32.Be3+

A.2.a) 32... Ke4 33.Bg1+ Kf4 34.Bh2#.

A.2.b) 32... Kg3 33.Rg1+ Kh2 (33... Kh3 34.Qf3+ and mate in two) 34.Qe2+ Kh3 35.Qf3+ and mate in two.

B) 27... Rg7 28.Rxg7+ Kxg7 29.Bd4+

B.1) 29... Kg8 30.g6

B.1.a) 30... hxg6 31.Qh8+ Kf7 32.Qg7+ Ke8 33.Qg8#.

B.1.b) 30... Bf8 31.Qd5+ Ne6 32.Rxe6 Qc6 33.gxh7+ Kxh7 34.Qf5+ Kg8 35.Qg6+ Bg7 36.Qxg7#.

B.1.c) 30... Bd8 31.Qd5+ Ne6 (31... Kf8 32.g7+ wins) 32.Rxe6 as above.

B.2) 29... Kf8 30.g6 looks similar to B.1.

Dec-26-21  Tiggler: I thought 27.Bd4 right away was winning. Perhaps not. When I saw white's actual first move, which I had also considered, I found the rest without help, avoiding the later errors.
Dec-26-21  Brenin: <Tiggler>: I'm afraid that 27 Bd4 loses immediately to 27 ... Qxf5, e.g. 28 Rxe7 Nxb3 29 Bc3 b4 30 Qe2 Re6: White is down by a R, with no compensation.

eternaloptimist: Wow I actually played the 1st several moves correctly for an “Insane” puzzle & I did it really quickly!! Although I personally don’t think it’s quite difficult enough to b an “Insane” puzzle. After the 1st several moves u do have to think for a while however. I played 33.♖g1+ (instead of f5) but according to Stockfish it still wins!
Dec-26-21  Stanco: my continuation 36.Qg6+ proved to be winner for white ie 36...Kh8 37.Qh6+ Kg8 38.Rg1+ Kf7 39.Qg6+ Kf8 40.Qg8#

or 36...Kf8 37.f6 Bxf6 38.Qxf6+ Qf7 39.Qh8+ Qg8 40.Qh6+ Kf7 41.Qf4+ Kg7 42.Rg1+ ( if 40...Qg7 41.Qxd6+ Kg8 42.Re7! Qg4? 43.Qh6! 😉 )

Dec-27-21  agb2002: <Teyss: Impressive analysis by <agb2002>. A few differences with what the engine provides, will review in the following days.>

Thank you!

To me, the most difficult decision was White's 33rd move:

click for larger view

I discarded 33.Bd4+ and was unable to make 33.Rg1+ work so 33.f5 was the only remaining option and had a number of advantages: opens the c1-h6 diagonal, controls e6 and g6, adds the possibility of f6, reserves the rook check on g1+ when appropriate and leaves the rook on the e-file which can be useful to cut the black king if necessary.

However, it allows a number of replies and although I saw 33... Kf8 when considering them I forgot it in my analyses and later in my post. A bit annoying.
