Kibitzer's Corner
Jun-14-20  Ulhumbrus: Instead of 41...Kf8 41...Qf6 invites White to exchange queens and goive Black's king a lead in development. At this point the position may be equal and this suggests that some point Caruana went too far trying to win. However that may be less dangerous than not trying hard enough to win.

41...Qf6 overlooks a dynamic factor: it allows White to make pawn breakthroughs creating a passed d-pawn and h-pawn.

41...Qf6?? 42. Qxf6+ Kxf6 43. c4 dxc4 44. d5 Ke5 <45. g5> and one of White's pawns will queen.

I hope one day you will wake up and say, "I must take greater account of dynamic factors in chess!"

In your variation one alternative to 43...dxc4 is 43...Kg7 44 cxd5 f6 fixing th g pawn and preparing to go after the d pawns. Now let us take it a little further: 45 Kc3 Kf7 46 Kb4 a6 keeping White's king out. Now what is White going to do?

As I don't deny the dynamic factors in chess I don't need to wake up to what I do not deny.

On 41....Qf6 42. Qxf6+ Kxf6 43. c4 Kg7, White has <44. c5> creating a passed c-pawn while still threatening to break through with g5. I don't see a defense.
Jun-14-20  Ulhumbrus: <beatgiant> It looks as if 41....Qf6 loses. After 42 Qxf6+ Kxf6 I call the resource 43 c4!! an inspired move.

It is however a resource that seems useful to know about and which can recur.

In fact such resources must be considered a part of the technique of the ending.

That means that the differences which all such resources make to a player's view can be said to correct it and he can be said to have not attained a complete mastery of the technique without these changes.

I can imagine that amongst other things Carlsen has paid particular attention to acquiring mastery of all possible combinatorial resources in endgames. If this is so, I don't know how much or how little Kasparov's training has had to do with it.
