Dec-28-21 | | Brenin: 33 Rf8+ Kxf8 (forced) 34 Qxf6+ Rf7 35 Qh8 mate, or 34 ... Kg8 35 Re8 mate. |
Dec-28-21 | | beenthere240: I had a much slower solution beginning with Qxf6. |
Dec-28-21 | | drollere: the white Q is en prise so either check or a Q move seems relevant. i first looked at Qh2 threatening Qh5#, but g4 blocks that at cost of a B. i then looked for a check and had 33. Rf8+ Kxf8, 34. Qxf6+ Kg8, 35. Re8# |
Dec-28-21 | | gary11201: I too started with Qxf6. |

 | | corneliussulla: queen takes bishop/f3 is very quick |
Dec-28-21 | | Tiggler: Also the very sweet Q sac Qxf6. Only one move slower than the text. |
Dec-28-21 | | mel gibson: I chose 33.Qxf3 which Stockfish 14 says is mate in 4.
33...Qxf3
(33. Qxf3 Nc2+ (♘a3-c2+ ♗d3xc2 ♕a5xa2+ ♔a1xa2 g5-g4 ♕f3-f5 g4-g3
♕f5-h5+) -M4/245 1)
One move faster is the text solution which is mate in 3. (33. Rf8+
(♖e8-f8+ ♔f7xf8
♕f4xf6+ ♖c7-f7
♕f6-h8+) +M3/245 0) |

 | | Breunor: Losing move is 27 Rb7? Black had a very slight advantage before, but after that move the following combination is unstoppable. |
Dec-28-21 | | saturn2: 33. Qd6 threatens Qe6 , Qf8 and Rf8 mate. Actually it is mate in 6. Black has only useless checks Nc2 Qa2. |
Dec-28-21 | | geeker: I thought about the Queen sac, but was not confident about it so the Rook sac was the first candidate I examined. Quickly saw the mate, so forgot about the Q sac idea! Pity. |
Dec-28-21 | | raymondhow: I found the text move 33.Rf8+, queen moves seemed less clear to me. Less tricky than yesterday.. |
Dec-28-21
 | | ajk68: I went with Qxf6. In some ways it is more satisfying to gobble all of black's pieces as he helplessly tries to avoid mate. |
Dec-28-21 | | Brenin: 33 Qxf6+ is mate in 9, after 33 ... Kxf6 34 R1e6+ Kf7 35 Bxh7 (threatening mate by Bg8 or Bg6) Nc2+ 36 Bxc2 Be4 37 Bxe4 Qxa2+ 38 Kxa2 Re7 39 R8xe7+ Kf8 (or Kg8) 40 R8e7+ Kf7 41 Bg6 mate. White can sadistically enjoy Black throwing one piece after another into the hopeless defence until there are none left. Personally, I'd rather get it over quickly with 33 Rf8+. |

 | | scormus: Since the game was blitz, it's not surprising that W chose the straightforward route. But 33 Qxf6+ caught my eye as being (to me anyway) a more satisfying way to win. Especially if you wanted to make B suffer. |
Dec-28-21 | | AlicesKnight: Saw the gameline quickly, with mate on e8 or h8 to follow. 32. ... g5 opens the way but even after 32. ... Qg5 Black still looks in trouble after Qxf3 (though not 33.Qxg5? Bxd4) and white can extract his K from danger. |
Dec-28-21 | | agb2002: White has a rook and a pawn for a bishop and a knight. Black threatens gxf4 and Bxg2.
The black king protects the bishop on f6. Hence, 33.Rf8+ Kxf8 34.Qxf6+ Rf7 (34... Kg8 35.Re1#) 35.Qh8#. |
Dec-28-21 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: I solved this pretty much as intended, for a fun Tuesday puzzle. 1. Note that Rf8+ and Qxf6+ in some order are pretty close to being mate ... 2. ... with the catch being the Rf7 interposition in either case. 3. Find the version that actually delivers a quick mate. |
Dec-28-21 | | TheaN: A forced three move mate on a Tuesday; guess it's the holidays after all. <33.Rf8+ Kxf8 34.Qxf6+ Rf7 (Kg8 35.Re8#) 35.Qh8#>. Not much to it, rather obvious 'gaining access' combination. |
Dec-28-21 | | Diademas: Messed it up.
For some reason I thought 33.Qxf6+ Kxf6 34.R1e6+ was mate |
Dec-28-21 | | Brenin: <Diademas>: <For some reason I thought 33.Qxf6+ Kxf6 34.R1e6+ was mate.> It will be, but you need seven more moves to get there, none of them hard to see. |

Dec-28-21 | | Diademas: <Brenin>
I'm pretty sure I would manage to go astray. |

After <33.Qxf6+ Kxf6 34.R1e6+ Kf7 35.Bxh7!> Black is dealing with two mate threats by the bishop:

The only thing Black can do is forcing the bishop to retreat and then block access to g6: <35....Nc2+ 36.Bxc2> bishop retreats. <36....Be4> piece one <37.Bxe4 Qf5> piece two <38.Bxf5 Re7> else Bg6#, and now it's forced <39.R8xe7+ Kf8 40.Re8+ Kf7> and finally, <41.Bg6#>. About time :> |

 | | corneliussulla: BISHOP to g6 is YET ANOTHER WIN |
Dec-28-21 | | johnnydeep: After taking far too long to see anything great, I picked 33.Qd6, which seemed promising, and which the ENGINE says is mate in 6. So, I missed the better game move. And to be honest, I didn't really see the mate in 6 either :-) |
