Kibitzer's Corner
Sep-09-16  FairyPromotion: This was fun to follow live, even till the final move!
Sep-09-16  belgradegambit: Incredible game!
Sep-19-16  diagonal: 17. f4! going for complications, creative game by both players
Mar-18-19  Paragua: Black's piece coordination won this game for him.
Dec-30-22  goodevans: For anyone of around my age, Pele's loss is truly a sad occasion. Such an icon that even one of his misses - the one where he dummies the keeper but fails to net the ball afterwards - still stands out as one of the great football memories of my youth.

Very impressed at how Pelletier sac'd material to such good effect (21...Qxf5 and 28...Rd8).

Rapport's 66.Kh4 was a bit insulting. Like the petulance of a teenager he no longer was.

Dec-30-22  LivBlockade: I don't understand why White played e3 on move 9 followed by e4 on move 11.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Amazing and creative, just like Pele himself. Black showed remarkable cool on defense. Rather crazy that 54.Qh8+ ultimately would have done nothing for White.

  Sally Simpson: Good Morning Englishman,

Correct 54.Qh8+ goes nowhere but 54.Rxd2 Nxd2 55.Qxd2+ picks up a Knight and two dangerous pawns (56.Qxa5) would have made the inevitable win a bit tougher.

and here.

66.Kh3 was not really an insult, I've seen people just snatch the Queen in those situations. It was an end of game joke. Black could have got cute and played 66...a3 and then we would have 67.Qh6+ and the Queen chasing the King all over the board trying to give herself up 67...Kf7 68.Qf8+ etc.

Dec-30-22  SChesshevsky: <...why white played e3 on move 9 followed by e4 on move 11.>

Might be an interesting idea by Rapport. A quick e4 is known in the Trompowsky vs. the ...e6...h6 defence. Where the somewhat cramping big center offers some compensation for blacks B pair. With also possibly helping pressure on the king side after ...0-0, where white typically wants to aim.

But while e4 probably can't ever be bad, it's usefulness against ...0-0-0 might be questioned. Where believe Karpov had a number of tests from the black side.

Think Rapport's e3 protects d4 but also doesn't commit until seeing where blacks king goes. If ....0-0-0, maybe queen side pawn push more useful. But once 10...Rc8 eliminates ...0-0-0, then e4 seems consistent.

Idea is interesting and thoughtful but whether it's worth the tempo is probably an open question.

Dec-30-22  Messiah: Very bad pun.
