Oct-03-13 | | jerseybob: Howard Bernstein of Rutgers upsets Arthur Bisguier of C.C.N.Y. in a wacky game that appears in the March '47 CR. (Bernstein is pictured in the Feb.'47 issue, along with young R. Byrne). What scant theory I've seen here suggests that 8.Bd3 is best, but Bernstein plays 8.Bb3!?, daring Bisguier to snatch the e-pawn. He doesn't, instead sacking a bishop for a non-existent mate. So, was 8.Bb3 a blunder, or did Bernstein have "Secret Analysis"? Hmmmm |

 | | Phony Benoni: White's king is drive from pillar to post and back again. But, eventually he finds security -- and then it's Howard's Turn. |

Aug-17-19 | | spingo: Bernstein defended well because he was definitely on the rocks for a while. |

 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: Black might as well have played 16...Bb7+, but White seems to escape with 17.Kb5. |
|
Aug-17-19 | | sfm: According to Stockfish, amazingly, there was never a win for Black after 12.-,Qf2+ Any beginners here? In the middle game, walking your king alone down the board into enemy lines is usually a very bad idea, but if you win anyway, you are entitled to an unusually big grin on your face. |

Qe1/Qg1 Ba6+ 16. Ke3 (16. Ke2 Nxh1, and now if 17. Qxh1, then 17...Qf2+ 18. Kd1 Qe2#) Nxh1 17. Qxh1 Bb7, a {P] up with a solid position. |

Aug-17-19 | | catlover: Reminds me of a "Rocky Stallone" movie—after white's king gets punched all over the ring, but white comes back and delivers the knock-out. |

Is there any game where White's ♔ reached the 6th rank in less than 15 moves (and survived)? |
|
Aug-17-19
 | | Phony Benoni: I can find only one other where the king gets to the sixth rank by move 15: Keres vs J Vilkins, 1932 Although it's hard to understand why Black would accept a draw in the final position. Maybe he thought White could promote the king once it reached the eighth rank. This sort of thing happens to black more often, and is almost invariably fatal. Here's one where the Black king reaches d3 in only 10 moves: P Motwani vs P Rockwell, 1974 Apparently, it's quicker when you're walking downhill. |

Aug-17-19 | | whiteshark: Thanks for finding these games, <Phony Benoni>. In Keres vs J Vilkins, 1932 White even reaches the 8th rank (g8) on move 24 only to run back to f2 subsequently. |
