May-30-12  acirce: Gelfand dodged a bullet. Would have been quite a blow to start with a loss with white.
May-30-12  Manuel G. Vergara: Big Draw!!!

eternaloptimist: What a great game! I sure wish they could've played more games like this in the classical time control part of this match!
May-30-12  iamsheaf: Draw...

May-30-12  LucB: ... back in 10 minutes... time for a coffee!
May-30-12  kellmano: <acirce: Anand looked surprised when Ra3 was played.> He has an awful poker face. Svid said the other day that he was once playing Anand and he swore after Svid played a move.

I'd've thought it was worth learning to hide such emotions. Or possibly fake them.

chessgames.com: Don't touch that dial -- game #2 should start in about 10 minutes!
May-30-12  SamAtoms1980: Where was this last week?
May-30-12  KholdStare: Anyone want to ponder what would happen if 28.Qd3 was played?

sorokahdeen: So, how many tie-break games are there and when are they being played?
May-30-12  WinKing: Great first game to kick it off!
May-30-12  ajile: 22..Qb6 was the mistake.
May-30-12  Hesam7: To everyone who thinks this was superior to the boring 12 games before, the only reason this got exciting in the first place was because Gelfand played 19. a4 turning a position which was somewhere between = and into . In a normal game and with ample time Gelfand would never make such a mistake.

eternaloptimist: It's a draw but a very exciting & interesting draw!
May-30-12  VargPOD: Very good game! It's interesting to see if white had more after 28.Qd3 instead of game continuation 28.Qxh6+.
May-30-12  Strongest Force: madness...

May-30-12  aipragma: why the tournament organizers didnt design a "PIP" screen of a realtime overhead camera shot of the chessboard or even a "PIP" screen of the auditorium wide screen, than relying on non-realtime chessboard displays, is quite disappointing...

(PIP = picture in picture)

HeMateMe: Wild game; didn't look like a draw was coming.
May-30-12  Hesam7: Looking back it seems that Anand was very close to winning after 22. ... Qc4!. White has two main defences:

(a) 23. Bd3 Bxh2+ 24. Kxh2 Qxd5 25. Bf1 (this is more or less forced, the only other move that does not lose quickly is 25. Kg1 but after 25. ... Bc6 26. f3 Re3 27. Rf1 Rce8 Black is winning) 25. ... Re4 26. Bg2 Qh5+ 27. Kg1 Qg6 28. Rg3 Rg4 29. Rc1 Rxc1+ 30. Qxc1 Bc6

(b) 23. Rc1 Bf4 24. Qxf4 Qe2 25. Rxc8 Bxc8 26. Bg6 (26. Bh7+ Kxh7 27. Qxd4 f6 is worse because with the Queens on board White's King will feel a lot of discomfort) 26. ... Qd1+ 27. Kg2 fxg6 28. Qxd4 Qxd4 29. Bxd4 Rd8 30. Bxa7 Rxd5
