Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-05-09  sergeidave: Now Carlsen gets his revenge! :)
Jan-05-09  shintaro go: Stupendous King moves by Carlsen. Nakamura was given a beatdown in this game.
Jan-05-09  Jim Bartle: I really like the 5. e4 variation in the Slav, but it almost never seems to appear in top level games. (Maybe because it leads to losing positions?)
Jan-05-09  acirce: It certainly doesn't lose, but basically White is struggling for equality against best play.
Jan-05-09  KingG: Video of this game with comments from both players: https://webcast.chessclub.com/blog/...
Jan-06-09  clocked: It looks like white can even try the immediate 18.f4 then for example 18...Bxe4 19.fxg5 Bf5 (Bd5 20.g6) 20.Rxf5
Jan-12-09  DeltaHawk: I am way too afraid to move the king since it seems like a waste of moves, and what do I know about moving the king 20 times? Carlsen knew what he was doing when he kept moving the king around and decided the outcome later on.
Feb-14-09  KingG: Looking again at that video I posted earlier, it really is a bit shoking to see Nakamura spend so much time deciding which variation he was going to play. He said that he doesn't think it made a difference, but 30 or so seconds is quite a big handicap to give to someone like Carlsen.

Check It Out: <KingG> Yeah that's a cool vid as well. The comments added a nice insight. I wish we could have seen the clocks.

Playing through it slow I didn't realize that white had black in a difficult situation. I was thinking black had a crushing superiority on the queenside with his two extra passed pawns, though I knew white had kingside threats - but then after hearing the remarks, Particularly Naka thinking he could have maintained a winning position if he didn't play 34. Bxh6, I realized how much I missed.

In addition, Magnus said there was a draw by repetition offer, which I completely missed.

I like how Magnus avoided the schoolyard tactic after 44.Kh1 of 44...Rxg2 45.h7 and white wins the rook.

Playing through a rapid game and then seeing it live is educational and fun at the same time. Someone said that these fast games are worse than useless but I disagree: not only do I get an insight into GM thinking that gets to deep for me in classically timed games, but the shortness of the live play keeps me focused. If I could play chess in classical time as well as these guys in speed chess I'd be in heaven! :)

Mar-09-09  hrvyklly: <Check It Out: Someone said that these fast games are worse than useless> Botvinnik me thinks.
Mar-09-09  hrvyklly: <DeltaHawk> You'll like this one then... Tal vs Lisitsin, 1956
Apr-12-09  ninjaVariation: id love to see wang yue square off with h. nakamura! that'd be a great battle.
Apr-12-09  ninjaVariation: btw... guys, do you have any record of a game between these two great players? i think i didn't find one...
Apr-12-09  ninjaVariation: im sorry...i mean when they were already beyond 2600...
May-19-09  kingmundi: I too thought Black must be much better with the far advanced black pawns on the queenside (as pointed out by Check_It_Out above) around move 33. But Nakamura says he had a winning position during the game. (see the video posted above, at 6:05) Instead of playing 34. Bxh6, Nakamura says he should have played... 34. Rf6+ Kc7
35. Ra2
"... I [Nakamura] am probably winning, because he [Carlson] can not really defend against the threats of on d5, f7, and h6"
May-19-09  kingmundi: Just a fantasy, quick Crafty computer analysis of the game using Nakamura's suggested moves from 34. Rf6+ Kc7
35. Ra2 Kd8
36. Qf3 Qd7
37. Rb6 Kc8
38. Qf1 Kc7
39. e6 fxe6
40. Qa6 Qc8
41. Rc6+ (winning the Queen)
Jul-10-09  Everett: Nakamura is clearly a very strong player, and it is too bad he did not play 34.Rf6+

A similar but slightly different QGA with an early e4. http://www.chessgames.com/perl/nph-...

blazerdoodle: Then I must ask, where did Carlsen blow it? If he clearly had a lost position if Nakamura had played 34 Rf6 - that is, then he was losing, and I, as a lowly class player, don't see anyone pointing that out. Be curious to see.
Jun-04-10  Brandon plays: Nakamura seems to be a very strong player in blitz and really strong compared to most players, but in reality I think Magnus Carlsen could take him down anyday in classical time chess.

Magnus blundered in time trouble on some of his last games against naka, now Naka can feel the pain of defeat.

Mar-11-11  jmboutiere: According to Rybka 3 after 20 moves Carlsen has - 1.11 34.Rf6 is between + 0.47 and + o.60(0:03.04), I can supose that does not mean to have a winning position, especially in blitz and against Magnus
Mar-11-11  jmboutiere: According to Rybka 3 the decisive mistake is 46.Bd2
Mar-14-15  notyetagm: Nakamura vs Carlsen, 2009

A model game versus the <GELLER GAMBIT> for Black by Carlsen.
