Jul-31-08  lorker: this looks bad for Pelletier though. Alekseev can keep pushing his king forward and keep Pelletier tied down to the kingside. Then he can probably start pushing the kingside pawns and if Pelletier's knight moves he should probably get a second pawn and win easily.

chancho: The cellar must be an addictive place. How to explain what just happened to Pelletier?
Jul-31-08  Jesspatrick: Last year at Biel, Judit Polgar drew a ♘+♙ ending down two pawns.
Jul-31-08  lorker: either that or once Pelltier's king is stuck on the K-side Alekseev's king can move over to somewhere like c4 and he can then take the b-pawn. That might take his king too far away from his own -side pawns though, but I don't think that should matter too much.
Jul-31-08  Marmot PFL: If Aleeksev can beat Carlsen in the ending he should win this.
Jul-31-08  dumbgai: When four out of six players finish with a plus score, you know there has to be a Van Wely or Pelletier in the field.
Jul-31-08  dteodori86: What happen if alekseev and dominguez draw in the first place? Is there an extra game?
Jul-31-08  waustad: Now that they are past the time control, Pelletier can have a long think to plan out his strategy.
Jul-31-08  percyblakeney: Last year it was rapid tiebreak, but for some reason they don't write the rules on the official home pages...
Jul-31-08  Cactus: <waustad> But so can Alekseev!
Jul-31-08  4tmac: Interesting ending. I'm guessing white will win & Leinier will have to "share" the title.
Jul-31-08  DCP23: If it gets to rapids, Alekseev is a tough customer indeed. He already had an exact same experience in the Russian Superfinal vs Jakovenko and dispatched him very efficiently.
Jul-31-08  waustad: The point was that horrendous blunders are less likely on move 42 than move 39.
Jul-31-08  MrSpock: <waustad: The point was that horrendous blunders are less likely on move 42 than move 39.>

Here we are!

Jul-31-08  Cactus: <waustad> True, but that's something in Alekseev's favor, not Pelletier's.
Jul-31-08  acirce: 43.Kg5 seems like an easy win, doesn't it?
Jul-31-08  Marmot PFL: Very easy with time to think <Kg5>
Jul-31-08  whiteshark: Misdirected 42...Kd6. Running wrong direction.
Jul-31-08  Rawprawn: So are the tibreaks tonight or tomorrow?

chessgames.com: Congratulations to Alekseev for his fine performance as well. That's it for the live broadcasts today, thanks folks.
Jul-31-08  Marmot PFL: <whiteshark> If Ke6 Ke3 and I think white will still win even if it takes a little longer
Jul-31-08  DCP23: <Rawprawn: So are the tibreaks tonight or tomorrow?>

Tonight! Should start in 1 hour.

Jul-31-08  HFBA: <Rawprawn: So are the tibreaks tonight or tomorrow?>

I think they have a one-hour break before the tiebreaks.

Jul-31-08  percyblakeney: Yep, the official site confirms rapid tiebreak today now.
Jul-31-08  whiteshark: <Marmot PFL> I won't maintain the contrary. :D
