perfidious: Just when White appears to have set his centre pawns in motion, there comes a shattering blow, seemingly impossible......

23... Nc5

Mar-27-06  filipecea: 23...Nc5! If 24.dxc5 then Bxc5 with check regaining the knight 26.Rxd2

perfidious: One of the pleasing features of this ending is how Petrosian's consummate technique is based on the light squares, completely ignoring White's dreadful bishop, but the final piece of the puzzle comes with the exchange of that very piece.

Portsich presumably didn't want to wait for the executioner's axe to fall after 46.~ Rh5, when White can do nothing but mark time.

Oct-14-12  backrank: The duplicate game Portisch vs Petrosian, 1978 has a slightly different move order in the opening, and much more essential, 22 ... Re6 instead of 22 ... Ree8. Which game score is the correct one?

perfidious: If I had either my old Informator or that volume of the British Chess Magazine anywhere near, I'd verify this on the spot. It was in Pritchett's book on the Nimzo as I recall, but that's far away too.
Oct-14-12  sneaky pete: The duplicate has the right moves (5... d5 6... b6 7... Bb7 22... Re6; Informator 25 game 662).

  perfidious: Correction slip submitted.
Oct-15-12  backrank: <perfidious: Correction slip submitted.>

Let us see if it helps. There are several games around where I have submitted correction slips months ago, and even more than once for a game, but they keep on ignoring my submissions (and my submitted games as well). But maybe you're luckier than me, as you're a premium member :)

perfidious: <backrank> The corrections have tended to go better in my three months' time back at CG than they had before, though I should note that most of those were submitted before I became a premium member.
Sep-25-13  Howard: The Informant, as I recall, said that 23.e4 ?? was a blunder, and that Petrosian immediately had a won game after his startling 23...Nc5.

perfidious: In a vacuum, of course 23.e4 was an error, but Portisch had planned all this when he set about liquidating the central outpost with 17.f3. If White opts for other ideas at move 23, he will be in for a long, dour defence in the e-file; not the type of thing one would have wished to face against Petrosian.

gezafan: Petrosian invades with his king.
