Nov-08-20 | | Brenin: 18 ... Bxb5 19 Qxa8+ Qd8 20 Qxd8+ Kxd8 21 Rxf7 allows Black to survive with B+N vs R+3P, but White's three connected passed pawns on the Q-side should decide the game. (By the way, wasn't it the postman who always rang twice?) |

Nov-08-20 | | morfishine: <Brenin: ...(By the way, wasn't it the postman who always rang twice?) Yes it was, and IMHO, the original with Lana Turner and John Garfield was far better than the sad, unconvincing remake starring Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_P... |

Nov-08-20 | | goodevans: <8...Ne7> was a very curious move, blocking in the B and leaving a bit of a hole on d6 (at least temporarily). In the 100+ other occasions this position has been reached no one else has played it. I wonder how much consideration either player gave to the possibility that white can take immediate advantage of this with <9.Bxb5>, e.g. 9...axb5 10.Ncxb5 Qb6 11.Be3. |

 | | FSR: <goodevans> The Stockfish 9 annotations given to this game show that White should indeed have played 9.Bxb5!, as you point out. Basically it just wins a pawn, since Black daren't take the piece and should just decline with 9...Nbc6 as <OCF> proposed: <9.Bxb5 Nbc6 10.Nxc6 Nxc6 11.Ba4 Bb4 12.Rd1 O-O 13.Qc4 ⩲ +1.04 (20 ply)> |
|
Nov-08-20 | | Brenin: The pun doesn't really work with "milkman", either, as he simply leaves the milk on your doorstep, without ringing. |

Nov-12-20 | | goodevans: <FSR: <goodevans> The Stockfish 9 annotations given to this game show that White should indeed have played 9.Bxb5...> Just to set the record straight, those SF annotations weren't there when I posted. If they were then I wouldn't have bothered to post. What would be the point? And that illustrates my main gripe against the SF annotations that seem to be all-pervasive on CG.com these days: They dissuade us from doing our own analyses, or at the very least posting about them. For me that trumps the fact that these shallow analyses are fairly often wrong. |
