May-19-05  iron maiden: 3. Na4 was obviously tragic, but it's a very pretty rout, particularly the nineteenth move.
May-19-05  PaulLovric: poor pun too
May-19-05  AlaskanAmber: <Paul Lovric>: Clearly you have not seen the movie Spaceballs, which is the origin of this deliberately cheesy pun.

cu8sfan: I like the pun. And as I've written the other day when we had a Star Wars pun: Spaceballs was better than any of the Star Wars movies!
May-19-05  Gantastic: Chuckle-worthy: After 8... Be6, white has made eight moves, five of which were king moves!

Any good reason why 19... Qxb2, and why not 20. Bxb2?

An Englishman: Good Evening: Gantastic, 20.Bxb2,Nf3-d2 is a truly spectacular checkmate. Black's 19th was a big surprise to me, too.

But what I need to know is this: how many more bad Star Wars puns will we have to endure? Don't get me wrong; I helped make George Lucas a rich man by telling everyone, even complete strangers, to see the first one, but still, there's only so much a Jedi can take.

WannaBe: So we blame this all on <cu8sfan>? :-)
May-19-05  soberknight: Hamppe doesn't learn from his mistakes! The previous year his wandering king survived a wild sacrificial attack in the most famous 19th-century draw of all: Hamppe vs Meitner, 1872. Here, instead of 8...Na6 (or ...Nc6) Black played 8...Be6, left his queen on the board, and won.
May-19-05  soberknight: Chessgames.com could have done better with the pun by using a game won by Richard Forster. I think this shows the skeptics among us that sometimes chessgames chooses a good game even if the pun is weak.

Sneaky: I think the verdict is that 3.Na4 should draw with perfect play. Why somebody would play it to begin with is a debate hashed out over on the Hamppe vs Meitner, 1872, basically it's a way to lure your opponent into an attack more complicated than they are capable of correctly executing, and even if they do execute it perfectly, it still draws.
May-19-05  halcyonteam: Early attack. Nice ending
May-19-05  Zymurgy: I got the theme this week...it is funny puns.

cu8sfan: <WannaBe: So we blame this all on <cu8sfan>? :-)> Why? What have I done to deserve this?!
May-19-05  focoma: Who else thinks 9... d4+ would have been better? If not, why?
May-19-05  cuendillar: Well another pun option would be to pick a game with lots of tactics "may the forks be with you" :)
May-19-05  wgb: 11 ...Qb6+
May-19-05  aginis: Okay for everyone unfamiliar with current theory in the vienna game, 2...Bc5 is a mistake and 3.Na4! is the correct response. The key move is 7.Qe1 unfortunately neither white nor black were familiar with the variation (which was probably discovered after their time.)
May-19-05  ughaibu: Steinitz vs A Steinkuehler, 1874
May-19-05  Saph: I agree with <focoma>. 9...d4+ looks better.

Anyway, what the *bleep* was White's king thinking?

May-19-05  farrooj: very nice king hunt
May-19-05  kevin86: SPACEBALLS had many funny names:Pizza the Hut,Dark Helmet, and of course, The Schwartz (may it be with you).

This game looked a lot like the famous draw-two things Hamppe is known for-THE DRAW and The Hamppe-Alligator [sic] gambit. Here,he goes astray and his king becomes meat.

May-19-05  YouRang: Lesson: When your king is on b3 by move 8, you've probably didn't handle the opening very well.
May-19-05  Shams: <sneaky> <I think the verdict is that 3.Na4 should draw with perfect play.> that is a very premature verdict to say the least. All the pieces still on the board, only one pawn and one piece developed for each side, and you're talking about the ultimate truth of the position? You might as well make the same claim about the position before white's first move.

After 3...d6 or 3...Be7 or 3...Bb6 or another non-sacrificial line, three results are possible and nobody has any idea what perfect play might yield.

May-19-05  white pawn: The fact that you didn't understand it <PaulLovric> is what makes it a GOOD pun.
May-19-05  ajile: Brutal.

lol

Maybe white should just give up the E pawn eh?
