Nov-13-06  thegoodanarchist: This theme of transferring the queen from the kingside to the weakened a2-g8 diagonal is not as common as other tactical motiffs, but I find it aesthetically more pleasing than most
Nov-13-06  YouRang: Took me a little longer than usual for a Monday - probably because it wasn't the usual queen or rook sac tactic.

Very nice puzzle, requiring one to use the whole board, not just the corner surrounding the king. And it's not often that you see a long range mate so early in a game.

monopole2313: Reminds me of when I played the Caro-Kann as a beginner.

Although I solved this puzzle quickly, I normally find them hard to solve when they occur early in the game.

Nov-13-06  cavaleiro: What if blak plays 11...Kh8? Is there a mate too or white only wins the exchange (and a pawn)?
Nov-13-06  kevin86: This position is a variarion on the Boden Model-it was surprizing to see that 12 ♕b3 actually was a checkmate-but it is
Nov-13-06  kevin86: Not even a Caveman should fall for a mate like this! lol
Nov-13-06  Holmstrom: I will definately remember this game.
Nov-13-06  technical draw: <Kevin> Black gave this game away, man.
Nov-13-06  kbaumen: Bxf7+ was obvious, but it took me a little bit more time (30 sec) to find Qb3#. Of course after Kh8 it's lost for black also. In my opinion - typical Monday puzzle.
Nov-13-06  Holmstrom: There are obviously some improvements for black.
Nov-13-06  alphee: A nice and elegant one. The possibility of doubling attacking pieces provided the solution as white could not do much on the a2-f8 diagonal.

playground player: I knew it was a kind of Boden's mate, only with the Queen instead of the Bishop (which I knew had to be sacrificed)--and yet I couldn't find it! Aaaugh! Missed a Monday puzzle! Guess Qb3 was just too obvious for me to see. That kind of omission must tell us something about the human mind--like,it doesn't always work like it's supposed to.
Nov-13-06  zb2cr: <EmperorAtahualpa>,

I think you're right about 11. ... Kh8. White just cashes in 12. Bxe8 to go up by the exchange and a Pawn. Black's pieces are still in a tangle and after 12. ... Qxe8; 13. O-O-O White's development is nearly complete.

Nov-13-06  Ashram64: the setup of the game really camerflage the corrected move. I took an unusal longer time to sort out all the canadate moves..
Nov-13-06  Cannon Fodder: <Fisheremon: It was just a good example for beginners how to play openings.>

And as a beginner I appreciated it. It's nice to have one day out of the week to feel like I'm learning something.

Nov-13-06  ataturk: It took me a minute to see.. The bishop was blocking the mental path leading to the checkmate.
Nov-13-06  ataturk: This is the kind of checkmate that makes you bite a finger-thick steel rod out of anger...
Nov-13-06  Cannon Fodder: <ataturk: This is the kind of checkmate that makes you bite a finger-thick steel rod out of anger...>

Come to think of it, my dentist has been strangely happy since I took up chess.

Nov-13-06  Bob726: I got this easy Monday puzzle but at first i considered qb3 immidetaly but then realized that Bxf7+ was better beacuse it wins a pawn and the exchange instead of just the exchange with Rf8 Bxf8 Qxf8.
Nov-13-06  Agent Bouncy: After reading that one person saw the mate in 30 seconds and another person saw it in 45 seconds, I was annoyed for 4 seconds and then laughed for 7 seconds.
Nov-13-06  EXIDE: Missed this one. Don't know what to say.
Nov-13-06  Chess Classics: If black had had a gavemann knowledge of tactics, that might have done a world of good =)

Regards,
CC

Nov-15-06  DeepThought: Couldn't get it, it was not as easy as the other Mondays.
Apr-09-09  WhiteRook48: gavemen aren't like this
May-03-10  JimmyVermeer: Laszlo Polgar's book gives the first player's name as Zhulkov instead of Chulkov, and he also transposes White's 2nd and 3rd moves. Anyone know which is correct?
