Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-27-03  Tigran Petrosian: For king's indian players, this game made people think that the king's indian was at it's demise.
Jul-27-03  Kenkaku: I've heard similar things about the Petrosian System as well, which gives King's Indian Defense players quite a bit of trouble.
Aug-17-03  doktortarrasch: This system is so good for black it is unbelieveable. The kingside attack for black is so strong that even one inaccurate move can lead to forced mate. As for the Petrosian system, at the highest levels it is rarely played anymore, as sufficient improvements have been found for black.
Aug-17-03  Kenkaku: True enough, though here is a notable exception Kramnik vs Kasparov, 1994
Aug-17-03  morphynoman2: Why not 26... Rxg2!? 27. Kxg2 Qg7 28. Kh1 (only move!) Rg8
Aug-18-03  unclewalter: maybe b/c of 29. Qxf6 Qxf6 30. Bc3...then black's a rook down
Oct-12-03  morphynoman2: Maybe youre right, unclewater, thanks.
Apr-04-15  Carlo2000: <Tigran Petrosian: For king's indian players, this game made people think that the king's indian was at it's demise.>

But as someone (I think Tarrasch) once famously said: There are no good or bad chess openings, but there are good and bad chess players!

Oct-30-24  Mathematicar: I generally dislike positions that may arise after 8.d5. In my own games I prefer more flexible 8.Be3.

  Sally Simpson: Hi Mathematicar,

All KID players want that pawn on d5 and White too are generally happy with it. 8.Be3 Re8 or 8...Ng4 here endeth my theory. 8.d5 and the next 5-6 moves are routine.

The KID was in and out of the test tube around about this time. IMO this was one of the key games. 'Quintessential' may be stretching it a bit but ideas were built around this one. The KID was given a good going over the following year at Zurich.

Nov-02-24  Mathematicar: <Sally Simpson>, in blitz games I always get wiped out if I play 8.d5. One simply have to know these lines and schemes of play. I would rather play Black in that same position, hence my preference for more timid 8.Be3.
