Oct-26-04  kevin86: "I hate those Mieses to pieces"-Jinks the Cat

A nice sac where the minor mieses-ah pieces-rat out on the black king.

Rather Pixieish of me-or rather Dixieish ya'll.

Oct-26-04  Saruman: <patzer2> Actually I analyzed yesterday up to about move 10 in the game you provided, but found that black seems to be ok. So my previous comment was more of a immediate reaction.
Oct-26-04  patzer2: After 11. Qg6! White's "double (tripple) attack" threatens three mates:

11...fxg6 leads to the mate pointed out by Sneaky.

11...hxg5 12. Nxf6+ Bxf6 13. hxg5 sets up 14. Qh7#.

11...Nxd5 or any other Black move allows 12. Qh7#.

Oct-26-04  Knight13: "I hate thoes Mieses to Pieces!" -- Amateurs of Chess Players.

Ugh.. Man! How come NN always loses! Not fair!

Oct-26-04  patzer2: Maybe I should have said quadruple attack after 11. Qg6!, counting <Chessical>'s response to the <11...Kh8> possibility pointed out by <tonttu> as the fourth option (in addition to the three in my previous post).
Oct-26-04  Phoenix: Great pun, <chessgames.com>!!
Oct-27-04  AgentRgent: <Knight13: Ugh.. Man! How come NN always loses! Not fair!>

Not always...

Aug-13-06  Timothy Glenn Forney: Anyone else notice white sacrificed a pawn, but all the other pieces are still on the board.Very good pun indeed. This is a real one of a kind game.
Aug-13-06  sixfeetunder: Another great game in the same variation is Gufeld vs U Tarve, 1969
Aug-13-06  Timothy Glenn Forney: <sixfeetunder> Thanks for the link,I love Gulfeld's games.
Aug-14-06  Timothy Glenn Forney: <tonttu> 11...Kh8 is the best move, good catch. At least black has some chance with <chessical>'s line, by escaping the mating net.If 11...fxg6 12.Nxe7++ Rf7 13.Bxf7+ Kh8 or(Kf8) 14.Ng6# (black can interpose the Rook).
Dec-15-08  JimmyVermeer: This is game 4610 in Laszlo Polgar's "Chess: 5334 Problems, Combinations, and Games". Polgar transposes White's 2nd and 3rd moves, and includes the ending posted by Sneaky earlier - 11 Qg6 fxg6 12 Nxe7+ Kh8 13 Ng6# Instead of taking the Queen, Black might have played 11...Kh8, delaying his loss a number of turns. White seems to have a stronger position with 10 Nxf7.
Dec-18-08  thebribri8: This is the most beautiful mating attack I have ever seen. I have only said that twice before.
Feb-09-09  AniamL: What's the continuation after 11...Re8?
Feb-09-09  AniamL: I guess 12.Qxf7+ Kh8 13.Qg6 is good enough?
Mar-15-09  swarmoflocusts: <This is the most beautiful mating attack I have ever seen. I have only said that twice before.>

...But it's not a mating attack. 11...Kh8 prevents mate, although it does leave white with a winning advantage.

Mieses missed 10.Nxf7, winning easily (far more easily, in fact, than the position after 11.Qg6).

Mar-15-09  WhiteRook48: 11...fxg6 runs into mate in two. Brilliant attack!
May-01-09  JimmyVermeer: AniamL, 11 Qg6 Re8 12 Nxf6+ Bxf6 13 Bxf7+ Kf8 14 Bc4 Ke7 15 Qf7+ Kd6 16 Ne4#

There are lots of ways for White to win here. This is just one of them. Black's 11th move should be Kh8 or Bb4+.

Mar-30-10  thegoodanarchist: "Vienna Game: Stanley Variation. Monster Declined"

Who came up with that name?

Jul-25-10  rapidcitychess: The "Monster" is the famous Frakenstein-Dracula variation. 5...Be7 declines the monster.

GrahamClayton: One of 21 games played simultaneously by Mieses in a simul at Liverpool, England.
Aug-27-11  DrMAL: After 9.h4?! ole NN could have played 9...Nd4! for an advantage but instead he chose to see if he could survive after 9...Ne8?? Obviously, 10.Nxf7! wins quickly. After 10.Nd5? black gets an even bigger advantage with 10...Nd4! But NN played 10.Nf6? and Mieses found a secondary way to punish him for it (11.Nxf6+ obviously wins). I am surprised NN resigned, after 11...Kh8 white goes up the exchange but with little attack.

Troller: <I am surprised NN resigned, after 11...Kh8 white goes up the exchange but with little attack.> I think the score is incomplete, other sources have the game played till mate after 11..fxg6.

Thanks for pointing this out.
I would have been tempted to play this in a game.
