Jan-20-06  CavalloNero: Bc5 saves the queen?
Jan-20-06  beenthere240: Hmm 8. .....Bc5
9.Ne2 Qf2 mate!!

oh oh 8. ....Bc5
9.d4

Jan-20-06  Hudson Hawk: <Cavallo> I don't think so. I see...

8. ... Bc5
9. d4 Bxd4
10. Qxd4

Jan-20-06  dakgootje: first move was very obvious, second and third a little harder, but i dont consider it as a friday puzzle, maybe a...wednesday?
Jan-20-06  Hudson Hawk: <Cavallo> got me thinking, what's the best black can do? I actually got black up to a rook for queen exchange with...

8. ... b6
9. Ne2 Ba6
10. d3 Nxe4
11. Nxg3 Nxg3
12. Kg1 Nxh1
13. Kxh1

Jan-20-06  DeepBlade: A regular kibitzer of Greco's games should see this Bxf7 instantly!
Jan-20-06  patzer2: Today's puzzle solution is a Queen trap sprung with 6. Bxf7+!! Note that the alternative reply 6...Ke2 makes a little difference, as noted by <al wazir> above, but still allows White to win decisive material after 7. h3!

Here's a quick look with Fritz 8 and the Opening Explorer:

<1. e4 e5 2. f4 exf4 3. ♗c4 ♕h4+ 4. ♔f1 ♘f6 5. ♘f3 ♕g4??>

This not so obvious blunder loses immediately. Instead, Black should play 5...Qh5 as in Shirov vs Granda-Zuniga, 1993. Also playable per Fritz 8 is 5...Qh6, but White's strong play in B Maliutin vs S Levitsky, 1905 and B Maliutin vs G Helbach, 1905 may have discouraged this try.

<6. ♗xf7+!!> White springs the trap.

<6...♔d8> Black can put up more resistance, but is still lost after 6... Ke7 7. h3 Qg3 8.Nc3 Kxf7 [8... Ng4 9. hxg4 Kxf7? (9...d6 10. Rh3 Qxg4 11. Rh4 Qd7 12. Rxf4 c6 13. Bd3 is a positional crush) 9. Ne2 Qxg4 11. Ne5+ ] 9. Ne2 Nxe4 10. Nxg3 Nxg3+ 11. Kg1 Nxh1 12. Kxh1 .

<7. h3 Qg3 8. Nc3> 1-0. Black resigned here, but play might have continued 8...♔e7 (losing even more badly for Black is 8... Bc5 9. d4 Be7 10. Ne2 Nxe4 11. Nxg3 Nxg3+ 12. Kg1 Nxh1 13. Kxh1 ) 9. d3 ♔xf7 10. ♘e2 ♘h5 11. ♔g1 ♗d6 12. ♘xg3 ♘xg3 13. e5 ♗e7 14. ♖h2 ♘c6 15. c3 1-0.

Jan-20-06  homersheineken: Alright!!! My first Friday! I'm not very good at the King's Gambit, but i got this....it'll be a good weekend!

Sneaky: I wonder how many people that said that this was easy saw nothing more than 6.Bxf7+ Kxf7?? 7.Ne5+
Jan-20-06  svbabu: 8...Bc5
9. d4 b6
10. dxc5 Ba6
11. Ne2/Kg1 BxN Now, there is a plenty of time to get the queen back, just sac the Black bishop. But still black will lose the game 'cos of material.
Jan-20-06  YouRang: Quite easy for a Friday, even though, as <Sneaky> points out, it does go more than 2 moves deep.

How many times do you hear: "Don't bring the queen out too soon!".

Jan-20-06  Antipholous: <Kiadra> Don't play the King's Gambit. It's way too risky for white. It might be good to play against newbies that have no idea what they're suppossed to do, but black can get a reasonably large advantage on white very easily. Recent theory shows the King's Gambit is actually a blunder.
Jan-20-06  patzer2: <Recent theory shows the King's Gambit is actually a blunder.> Oh really! Where can I get a copy of this recent theory?.
Jan-20-06  DeepBlade: Fisher's book?

A little reminder; The Immortal Game was a King's Gambit.

I hate to say it, but at club level nobody can exploit (refute) the KGA to the maximum. Lots of people say ''The King's gambit is dead, its refuted'' but all chessplayers should know, everything can happen on the board! At club level its an excelent weapon, with basic development lines.

Jan-20-06  patzer2: <DeepBlade> For what it's worth, Fischer "bust" can be found at http://www.academicchess.com/images....

However, I remain skeptical, and think it's still a good practical try. Yet it is interesting that Spassky did not essay the King's Gambit against Fischer in their World Championship match in 1972, even though he had previously beaten Fischer with it.

At http://hem.passagen.se/tjmisha/kg_i... is some interesting research on resurrecting a key line in the King's Gambit.

Jan-20-06  Mendrys: <Kiadra> With all due respect to <Antipholous>, do play the Kings Gambit. It is very easy for either side to go wrong early and get crushed. If you are looking for a sharp tactical struggle right off the bat there is nothing like the KG. With this being said if you are a beginner and play it against a stronger player expect a sound whipping but you will learn a lot in the process though. :)

LIFE Master AJ: Actually, I have written a lot on the King's Gambit.

I doubt that it is busted, one of my web pages has a VERY deep review of the latest theory. (And I just updated this page last year.)

Jan-20-06  independentthinker: LIFE Master - the book you purchased by James Plaskett - quite amusing really - James is now on Who Wants To Be A Millionairre on TV :)

hehe

Jan-20-06  Cogano: Well, I don't know if I'd be honest by saying that I got it, in that, after 6.Bxf7+, I had a different continuation: 6...Kxf7, 7.Ne5+ Ke/d8, 8.Nxg4. I was so confident that I got it & felt crushed when I discovered that the game continued along a different line!

<YouRang> A couple of weeks ago, I had a rare opportunity to play a game with my brother. He made the exact same mistake. Except that he brought out his queen on the 3rd move! I've flirted with the idea of posting it here somewhere since, but wasn't certain enough that it deserved inclusion (I didn't want to come across as being arrogant -- "Oh look at my brilliant game & incredible skills etc." --, especially after having declared my ignorance and lack of knowledge of chess theory and lack of experience!)

This is also the briefest game I've ever seen. A day or two ago, I came across a game where a player resigned after move 12 I think & a kibbitzer complained about resigning too early. I was incredulous to say the least when I found a shorter game still, where a player resigned, that I shared with him. But this has to take the cake. Take very good care all and have yourselves a most joyous day, every day. Cheers!

Jan-20-06  patzer2: Here at http://www.chesscafe.com/text/kibit... is some analysis with ideas for White in the Allgaier Gambit variation of the King's Gambit.

ketchuplover: I only saw Kxf7 Ne5+ Please forgive me :)
Jan-20-06  Cogano: <ketchuplover> Who are you asking for forgiveness & forgive you for what exactly? We come here to learn and be generous, if we so choose, with what we know, if we've indeed read enough & played enough to have something intelligent & worthwhile to offer! Good luck and enjoy. Take very good care and have yourself a most joyous day, every day. Cheers!
Jan-20-06  Infohunter: <EmperorAtahualpa: <infohunter> I think you stole <Mating Net>'s avatar. :)

(if I'm not mistaken, that used to be his).>

You may be right, <EmperorAtahualpa>, but I just took what was listed as available, so I guess he must have relinquished it.

Jan-20-06  LluviaSean: this was an extremely easy friday!! wedsday's puzzle was harder...

Richard Taylor: I just (now) looked at this again and thought if only I could get the knight or B to attack the Black Queen on g3 - I saw Bxf7+ immediatly but there is here Kd8 or Kf7

But I saw that if Kf7 7. h3 Nc3 is going to win the Queen by 8. Ne2

Very instructive all the same.
