Honza Cervenka: 24.Nd2 was a very bad move. 24.fxg5 or 24.Nxf5 would have been much better.

If 35.Qxc2, then 35...Rxa4.

May-27-08  Jesspatrick: One of those uncommon games where Fischer didn't play a Gruenfeld or a King's Indian or a Benoni.
May-27-08  RookFile: He sometimes played the Queen's Gambit with black, but you're right, it was relatively infrequently.
Jun-05-08  Rod Serling: It seems Bobby could play just about any opening well except maybe the french because of his disdain for it. I wonder why Fischer didnt imploy more opening systems. Was it because he had extensive analysis and vast knowledge of the openings he played? I know when he played the WC he mixed it up with Spassky, playing Nimzo Indian, English, d4, and even Alekhines defense.
Dec-13-08  Travis Bickle: Well played by Bobby!

tamar: thank you <meloncio> for that photo

Bobby has just moved 14...Kb8, and Bogdan is contemplating 15 Nc5.

Interesting that with ...Kb8 that Fischer prepares c8 for the bishop to drop back, and then the knight is stranded on c5, driven back to a4 and eventually is taken on that square ending the game.

MissScarlett: Anyone got a date for this game?

C.N. 6084 states <the occasion being a small United States v Poland team match in Warsaw, shortly before the Olympiad in Varna>.

The Olympiad began on September 15th.

MissScarlett: Stand down, people. Think I've got it:

<In a preliminary exhibition match at Warsaw, Tuesday, the U.S. trounced [!] Poland, 3-2. The American team comprised Bobby Fischer, first board, followed by Robert Byrne, Donald Byrne, Ednar Mednis and Eliot Hearst. Losers in the match were the Byrne brothers.>

Daily Press (Hampton, VA), September 16th 1962, Sect.B p.11.

Tuesday was the 11th. Confirmation from a source such as <Chess Life> is still welcome.

Sep-03-17  Magpye: Eliot Hearst ran an article about the US Team at the Varna Olympics that included their tour of Poland and matches (1 regular and 2 blitz team matches - Fischer did not compete in the blitz events), in the November and December 1962 issues of Chess Life.

No date was given there for this match.

MissScarlett: Chess magazines, as a rule, haven't striven to be journals of record.
