plang: Reti clearly wins the opening battle leading to a Reversed Sicilan with Black's pieces on the wrong squares. 2..d5 or 3..e4 (the approach that Alekhine used against Reti later in the tournament) would have been more promising. After 6..bxc White is clearly better as Black cannot easily get in ..d5 and has no counterplay. Reti says that if 15..d6 then 16 Ne4 threatening 17 nxc5 and 17 Nxf6+ but Nunn points out that after 16..Rxe4 17 Bxf6..Qe8 Black would have been fine and suggests 16 Qa4 as a stronger alternative. Regaining material equality with 25..Rxc4 did not help Black much as he was a clear pawn down on the kingside and after 31 Ke3 White was free to make use of it. 36 h4! forced 36..h5; 36 g4 would have been weaker due to 36..g5. 47 Rxc7?..Rg3 would have made Black's defense easier. Reti says that 51..Rg2 would have lost as well but Nunn feels that after 52 Rxc3..Rxa2 53 f6..Rb2! (preparing to check from the side, if 54 Rc7..Kxh6 and draws) Black would still have had drawing chances; certainly that would have been a stronger defense.
