- A.J. van den Hoek
A.J. van den Hoek was born in Amsterdam, Holland, 1921. He became acquainted with chess not long before world war 2.
In 1942 he was shared first at Leeuwarden against strong players like Cortlever and Van Scheltinga. After winning the play off he was given the right to challenge former world champion Euwe for the national title. This was only a few years after he learned chess and not surprisingly he lost the match.
However, his games made a good impression, and in January 1943 he won the Beverwijk "Hoogovens" tournament-now called Corus. When he refused to sign a declaration of loyalty for the Germans van den Hoek was deported to do forced labour in a German defence plant.
He was killed by an (allied) bombing raid shortly before the end of the war. The few games that he left give us a glimpse of his talent and are great fun to replay.
This collection will be expanded when c.g. adds some uploaded games.
