Marshall - Roething (1900)
Compiled by MissScarlett
--*--

This seven game match was organised to mark the opening of new rooms of the Cosmopolitan CC. It was announced in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Tuesday, October 2nd, p.17:

An interesting series of seven games has been arranged between Frank J. Marshall and Otto Roething, champions, respectively, of the Brooklyn and Cosmopolitan Chess Clubs, to be played at the Cosmopolitan Club rooms, 1 1/2 Second avenue, Manhattan, which provides the purse. Hostilities will open next Saturday at 2 P.M. and play will continue every alternate day. The two principals, it will be remembered, divided the honors in their individual games of the first class tourney at the Thousand Islands, in August, when Marshall captured first prize by half a point.

The following day it was reported that the schedule had been changed to accommodate Marshall's wish to play in an event at the Manhattan CC. The new dates were October 5, 7, 9, 10, 12, 13 & 14.

Louis Uedemann in the Chicago Tribune of October 21st, p.20:

Although Marshall had little to gain by his victory, except the small purse offered, his chivalry in engaging in a contest with a player so little known as Roething, just to create interest in a new Cafe Chess club, is quite commendable. The Brooklyn player seems to have treated the match rather lightly, as he tried a variation in the Scotch gambit in which, as second player, he answered the gambit move of 3 PQ4 with the same reply.
