= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = "Unter dem Titel Schachmeisterschaften des Generalgouvernements wurden von 1940 bis 1944 diverse vom Großdeutschen Schachbund organisierte Schachturniere im besetzten Polen ausgetragen. Federführend für diese Turniere war der dortige schachbegeisterte Generalgouverneur Hans Frank.

<1941 fand das sogenannte "2. Gouvernementsturnier" statt; die Runden 1-3 sowie 9-11 wurden in Krakau, die Runden 4-8 hingegen in Warschau gespeilt. Das Bild ( http://bremersg.de/s/cc_images/cach... ) zeigt die 9. Runde, die am 16. Oktober gespielt wurde. Links im Hintergrund spielt Carls gegen den Österreicher Josef Lokvenc remis. Davor sitzt (allein am Brett) der spätere Turniersieger Alexander Aljechin, während im Vordergrund in Uniform und mit Brille der am Ende mit Aljechin punktgleiche Paul Felix Schmidt zu sehen ist. Schließlich erkennt man noch ganz rechts mit dem Rücken zum Betrachter Efim Bogoljubow.>

Für Carls lief das Turnier nicht so gut; zwar remisierte er gegen Aljechin, aber er gewann nur eine einzige Partie und wurde mit 3,5 Punkten lediglich 10. von 12 Teilnehmern."
