Obstruction
Compiled by patzer2
--*--

More commonly used here in English is the term "Obstruction," but I use "Blockade" here because that is what ECO used in their Enclyclopedia of Middle Games to describe this tactic. The Blockade or Obstruction tactic occurs when players are forced to make a move or capture which blocks or obstructs their pieces from defending against their opponent's attack.

It is associated with the term "Obstruction Sacrifice" which is a sacrifice intended to blockade a square, file, rank or diagonal. As such it can be considered to be the opposite of a clearance sacrifice.
