Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Vienna (1904/05)

Following the success of its Vienna (1903) thematic Gambit tournament, the city of Vienna was host once again to a thematic tournament which ran from November 29, 1904 to January, 1905. This time the theme position of the tournament was a familiar one found in the King's Gambit Declined, 1.e4 e5 2.f4 Bc5:

Among the ten participants of the double round robin event were strong masters of the Austrio-Hungarian Empire, including Geza Maróczy, Milan Vidmar, and Vienna's own Carl Schlechter, who triumphed in another of his many Viennese tournaments.

Vidmar withdrew following the sixth round. His remaining games in the first cycle were forfeited and those in the second cycle were cancelled. In addition, Marco forfeited his games in rounds 14-16 (Schlechter, Wolf, Albin), and Loewy Jr. forfeited to Schlechter (round 11), Albin (12), and Maroczy (16). All games decided by forfeit have been omitted from this collection.

The games Neumann 0 Perlis (round 5) and Maroczy 1 Loewy Sr. (round 16) are unavailable.
