Introduction
Messrs. W. Penn Shipley and J. P. Morgan have started a little "first five" match. J. P. Morgan scored the first (sic) game, a Steinitz gambit, in gallant style. Game No. 2 (sic) was a draw. The third game was a win for Mr. Shipley. (1)
The match between Messrs. W. P. Shipley and J. P. Morgan stands 2 to 1 and 1 draw in favor of Mr. Shipley. (2)
The match bewteen Messrs. Walter Penn Shipley and J. P. Morgan now stands 3 to 1 and one draw in Mr. Shipley's favor. (3)
The short contest between Messrs. W. P. Shipley and J. P. Morgan terminated in Mr. Shipley's favor with the score of 5 to 1 and two draws. (4)
Notes
Something fishy is up with the color allocations and the game numbering as given by the Philadelphia Times. The most likely explanation is that game 1 was the draw and game 2 was won by Morgan, thereby preserving Shipley having white in the odd numbered games.
