Introduction
The large and beautiful silver chess cup to be presented by Mr. George W. Childs to the Franklin Chess Club is now all but completed. The first tournament competing for the same will start at the club rooms, southeast corner Eleventh and Sansom streets, on the first Monday in December. Entries to same will close on the Thursday preceding. This tournament will be given to all chess players in Philadelphia under the rules to be framed by the Franklin Chess Club, which will also offer additional prizes. The distinctive club prizes, however, will go only to members of the club who will play in the tournament. Thus, should a member of the club win the first prize, his name will not only go on the Childs cup, but he will in addition be entitled to the first club prize. Should, however, a non-member of the club win the first prize, his name will equally go on the cup, but he will have no claim to the first club prize, which will go the best score made by a member of the club. Full programme of the tournament not yet completed. (1)
At date of writing the lists of the Childs cup tournament had not closed. Messrs. W. P. Shipley, Herman G. Voigt, Mordecai Morgan, Max Livingstone and Hollis Webster are among the entries. (2)
There are a few games yet to be contested in the Childs Cup tournament at the Franklin Chess Club, Eleventh and Sansom streets, but so far as the first place is concerned the tourney is at an end, for the best score is secured to Mr. Emil Kemeny with 14 wins to 4 losses. Messrs. Voigt, Bampton and Shipley contributed to the short end of Mr. Kemeny's score. Mr. Voigt did the lion's share by winning both his games. Bampton scored one and Mr. Shipley's two draws made up the remaining game of Mr. Kemeny's losses. The other leaders are W. P. Shipley, 12½ (to play Bampton); Voigt and Bampton, 11½ each (to play M. Morgan and Shipley respetively). (3)
