Introduction
The entrance lists of the seventh annual chess championship tournament of the New Orleans Chess, Checkers and Whist Club duly clode on the 15th instant with the following sixteen gentlemen enrolled: Messrs. H. E. Barton, F. E. Bernard, J. V. Charpainter, F. Dupré, G. Farrar, E. J. Hamilton, F. C. Kaczoroski, L. L. Labatt, F. J. Mitchel, J. Rocchi, J. D. Séguin, O. M. Tennison, J. W. Treen, C. O. Wilcox, J. B. Wilkinson and J. A. Wogan. After the pairing for the first half, play was at once begun, and a considerable number of games have been contested during the past week. (1)
Synopsis
To universal regret, Mr. Labatt has been compelled to withdraw from the contest, owing to a sad and sudden domestic bereavement, in which he has the sincere sympathy of his many friends in the club. (2)
The course of play in the pending tournament of the New Orleans Chess, Checkers and Whist Club has been rather slack during the past week, but last night's play was expected to conclude all games in the first half. Owing to some objections made to Mr. Labatt's withdrawal, it should be stated that he has resumed play and will, if possible, complete all his matches in the tourney. To general regret Mr. Wilkinson, who had attained a very creditable score, has been compelled to withdraw, having, however, finished all of his parties in the first half. (3)
A further and temporarily awkward delay has occurred in the winding up of the games of the first half, Messrs. Charpantier and Wogan being prevented by sickness from concluding the five parties necessary to make up the 120 games of the division of the tourney. However, both gentlemen are expected soon to be in trim again, and meanwhile play has actively begun in the second half. The features since our last report have been a portentous game of 104 moves between Messrs. Wilcox and Kaczoroski, won by the former by very careful play; a 93 move battle between Messrs. Treen and Dupré, in whcih a very curious forced draw, though with bishops of same diagonals and White two Pawns ahead, was reached, but which was lost by a faulty play of the latter; and a well earned victory of Mr. Dupré over Mr. Wilcox. (4)
Play has progressed with only fair promptness in the pending tournament of the New Orleans Chess, Checkers and Whist Club during the past week, owing to the fact that several contestants are temporarily out of town or still on the sick list. Better results are, however, hoped for during this week, when all will be in play again. We regret, however, to state that Mr. Rocchi, owing to departure, has been obliged to withdraw, and that Mr. Wilcox, also, has resigned from the contest. (5)
As will be seen from the appended score, the four prizes (aggregating about $65) were carried off as follows: First Prize, Mr. Jas. D. Séguin; Second Prize, Mr. Leon L. Labatt; Third Prize, Mr. H. E. Barton; Fourth Prize, Mr. E. J. Hamilton. The following games, played in the second half, were canceled from the score, the player withdrawing not having played 50 per cent of his games in such half: Wilcox v. Dupré: Dupré won. Rocchi v. Labatt: Labatt won. Treen v. Dupré: Treen won. Treen v. Kaczoroski: Treen won. Treen v. Hamilton: drawn. Treen v. Séguin: Séguin won. (6)
Mr. Barton had to score his last and decisive game by forfeit from Mr. Wogan (who was absent from the city). (7)
Missing Forfeit Data
Mr. Wogan had to forfeit his last five games, owing to absence from town. It should be added that the considerable number of apparent losses in the scores of Messrs. Charpantier and Farrar are largely occasioned by forfeits on account of sickness and absence. (7)
