Introduction
The entrance lists for the fifth annual chess tournament of the New Orleans Chess, Checkers and Whist Club close on the 28th ultimo with twelve contestants enrolled, namely, Messrs. H. E. Barton, E. J. Blanchard, J. G. Bland, L. Claudel, F. Dameron, M. F. Factum, H. A. Milton, J. D. Seguin, J. P. Simpkins, C. F. Stagg, O. M. Tennison and C. O. Wilcox. The term of play is stretched out over a comparatively long period for the very important purpose of enabling members to play only when leisure permits and without being compelled in any way to interfere with business or more serious matters, as might possibly be the case if the period of play were brief and the games had to be played at short intervals. In this connection, too, we are please to note that the managing committee have adopted the rules of last year's tourney, which were specially framed to such an end, and that furthermore they have specified the code of the Fifth American Chess Congress as that of the present tournament. Play began on Tuesday evening last, and a number of interesting games have been contested during the week. (1)
Milton retired and forfeited his last six games. (2)(3)
The prizes, aggregate somewhat to over $75 in value. Simpkins won the special prize for the best aggregate score by points against the prize winners. (4)(5)
Note
Michael Dunn played under the pseudonym of "M. F. Factum".
