Synopsis
A match, four games up, draws not counting, commenced on Monday at the City of London Chess Club between Messrs. F. J. Marshall and W. Ward. Two games have been played and won by Mr Marshall. A match, short, but of great interest to English amateurs, of four games up, draws not counting, commenced last Monday at the City Chess Club between Mr. W. Ward, the Club Champion, and Mr. F. J. Marshall, the American expert. Play will proceed on Mondays, Wednesdays, and either Thursdays or Fridays, as may be mutually agreed. (2)

The American expert also won the second game in his match versus Mr. W. Ward. The opening, a Queen's Gambit declined, was played in an energetic and purposeful manner, and resulted in the win of two pieces for a rook. A long end game then ensued, Mr. Ward making a stubborn but vain resistance. The third game was played on Monday, and after a long struggle was adjourned until Tuesday, Mr. Ward having slightly the preferable position with a knight and five pawns against a bishop and five. On the resumption of play, Mr. Ward won after upwards of 70 moves. (3)

In the match between Messrs Marshall and Ward at the City of London Chess Club four games in all have been played, and each player has won two, Mr Ward's successes being in the third and fourth. (4)

The score in the match between Messrs Marshall and Ward is—Marshall three; Ward, two. (5)

The match at the City of London Chess Club between Marshall and Ward terminated on Monday in favour of Marshall, the final score being Marshall four, Ward two. (6)
