Marshall, the American expert. Play will proceed on Mondays, Wednesdays, and either Thursdays or Fridays, as may be mutually agreed. (2)
The American expert also won the second game in his match versus Mr. W. Ward. The opening, a Queen's Gambit declined, was played in an energetic and purposeful manner, and resulted in the win of two pieces for a rook. A long end game then ensued, Mr. Ward making a stubborn but vain resistance. The third game was played on Monday, and after a long struggle was adjourned until Tuesday, Mr. Ward having slightly the preferable position with a knight and five pawns against a bishop and five. On the resumption of play, Mr. Ward won after upwards of 70 moves. (3)
