Australian Open 1994/95 |
Kings Hotel, Perth, Western Australia Dec 28 - Jan 10 The Australian Open Chess Champion for 1994/95 is Dinh Duc Trong, a seventeen
year old FIDE Master from Vietnam. Dinh arrived late to the Championships due
to visa delays. He received three half-point byes for the first three rounds,
and was accelerated by an extra point for rounds four and five, and half a
point for rounds six and seven. Dinh drew with Ngan Koshnitsky in round 5, but
from then on won every game, defeating rivals Alex Wohl and Stewart Byrne in
rounds 9 and 10.
Wohl's early loss in round 3 to Dick Lilly cost him dearly, and he finished
half a point behind Dinh after drawing with Sam Low in Round 10.
The highly rated Novag Diamond computer finished on 7, after losing to David
Cordover and Sam Low in almost identical games (a bit of study paid off for
Sam!)
Winner of the prize for first woman was Ngan Koshnitsky on 7 points. Top Scores:
Dinh Duc Trong (FM, VIE) 9; Alex Wohl (IM, Qld) 8.5; Stewart Byrne (WA), David
Ellis (WA), Eu-Jin Teh (WA) 8; Jeremy Hirschhorn (NSW), John Hanks (Vic),
Robert Maris (WA), Michael Salter (NSW), Henry Suryadinata (WA), Joel Harp
(NSW), Sam Low (Vic) 7.5.
