Jan-06-11  e4ia: Moro seems to have gone out with a "respect" mate.... a great but aging bull whose best chess days are apparently behind him, brought to rest by an even more senior matador. I'm sure Chuky feels some degree of empathy for Moro.

I hope we see Moro again....
but don't be surprised if we do not,
or in only selective/infrequent top level tournaments.

Jan-06-11  mike1: Godena- Caruana a draw according to the official site but (maybe it is only me) black should win in the final position 54. Ke4(??) Re3+, 55. Kd5 Re5+ and Rxa5....
Jan-06-11  fisayo123: kings are usually placed at the centre of the board when the game is decided, hence 54.Ke4

Gypsy: The game-collection still has two dupplicate games while two other games are missing. That results in a pretty garbled up x-table. If I calculate correctly, the final standings should be thus:

1-2 ... Hashimov, Vallejo-Pons (+3)
3-5 ... Navara, Movsesian, Ivanchuk (+1)
6-7 ... Caruana, Onischuk (=)
8 ...... Morozevich (-1)
9 ...... Short (-2)
10 .... Godena (-6)

Jan-06-11  Eyal: Gashimov and Vallejo Pons both score 6/9, but the Sonneborn-Berger tie-break favours Gashimov - mostly by virtue of his victory over Vallejo himself.

Real final results, without CG.com duplicates and with Sonneborn-Berger tie-breaks:

1. Gashimov 6 (SB 26.5, TPR 2815)

2. Vallejo Pons 6 (SB 23.75, TPR 2819)

3. Movsesian 5 (SB 21.75, TPR 2734)

4. Navara 5 (SB 19.25, TPR 2736)

5. Ivanchuk 5 (SB 19, TPR 2729)

6. Caruana 4.5 (SB 19.5, TPR 2692)

7. Onischuk 4.5 (SB 19.25, TPR 2695)

8. Morozevich 4 (TPR 2650)

9. Short 3.5 (TPR 2616)

10. Godena 1.5 (TPR 2437)

Jan-06-11  frogbert: <I hope we see Moro again.... but don't be surprised if we do not, >

well, one more illustration: here's a list of some current players ordered in terms of descending rating (not shown) with year of birth listed for "enlightenment".

1. wojtaszek (1987)
2. vallejo pons (1982)
3. fressinet (1981)
4. vitiugov (1987)
5. sutovsky (1977)
6. efimenko (1985)
7. berkes (1985)
8. tomashevsky (1987)
9. laznicka (1988)
10. morozevich (1977)

moro isn't even the highest rated player born in 1977 anymore, and the others listed above him are neither the brightest stars born in 1982, 1985, 1987 and so on. at least not judging by what we've seen so far.

moro's highest live rating was 2798,9 in late august 2008. now, 1,5 years later, he's down to 2694,4 - more than a hundred points less.

Jan-06-11  e4ia: Hi frogbert:

Thanks for your interesting post below;

I think you mean 2 1/2 years later...vs posted

Jan-06-11  frogbert: time flies ... :o)
Jan-07-11  Matsumoto: Ivanchuk and Morozevich swing up and down ... don't count on any of them staying down for long! Genious genes don't go away, and the geniousness of these two players is aroung the 2800 level. (As the the age question: look at Anand!)
Jan-07-11  Kazzak: Moro has run out of batteries.

Troller: Yes, it would be more surprising if Moro came here and blasted the field away, he has hardly played any chess for more than a year I think. With his high-risk style, lack of serious practice is bound to reflect on the results. I'm sure Moro has some top performances left in him, should he wish again to pursue his career actively.

Congrats to Gashimov & Vallejo both; the former was top-rated Azeri and in top-10 a couple of years ago I think, but has faded a little since then. Nice comeback for him. As for Vallejo, he is greatly talented and has great team event performances, but has not been too succesful in top-level tournaments. Even if this was not Tal Memorial or Dortmund, it was a pretty strong event.

Also my respects to the organizers, despite the difficulties with relay. The field was much more interesting than many a "super-tournament" IMO.

Jan-07-11  SatelliteDan: <Troller> "Ditto"
I also think anytime Moro & Chuck are in a event it brings with it a certain amount of entertainment and action. :)
Jan-07-11  weisyschwarz: Thanks <Eyal> for the final standings.
Jan-07-11  znsprdx: <Thanks <Eyal> for the final standings.>YES! why can't <Chessgames> get it right - what is with the 10th games in a 9 round tournament - or were there sudden death tie-breaks? It seems 'Chessbomb' has it right. Strange that 'Chessok' didn't cover this....
Jan-07-11  frogbert: <Ivanchuk and Morozevich swing up and down ... don't count on any of them staying down for long!>

measured in calendar time, moro has been on a down-wards spiral for a long time now. here's the official rating development, starting july 2008:

2788
2787 (9 games)
2771 (20 games)
2751 (13 games)
2750 (18 games)
2732 (19 games)
2715 (6 games)
2700 (9 games)

[2694,4 (9 games)]

previously he's played games in 7 of the rating periods since july 2008, and he's lost rating points in each and every one of them. this is the 8th rating period since his top rating of july 2008, and now he's about to lose 6 more points, assuming he doesn't play more until march 1st.

2,5 years where he exclusively has <lost> points sounds like a bit more than a run of bad form. even ivanchuk's long streaks of good form/bad form seldom last more than 6 months. :o)

Jan-07-11  CWQ: Hi all, I decided to jump into the fray and introduce myself to the community, I enjoy reading the kibitzes here a great deal, for some time now. I hope to contribute and not to detract. Overall the comparison between Moro and Chuky might have to stop within the discussion of creative genius, and the similarity they seem to share in singular vision, respectively. As Chuky plays nearly non- stop , and Moro seems to nearly shun the thought of Chess as profession. There is a reasonble inroad to Mr. Moros free -fall, as well as a hint at the disparody in comparing these two beyond the fact that they both seem to be rather unique and brilliant at the board.

Aside from there, I was super intrigued by Godenas use of the clock , I could not understand it. More because of the successive rounds in which it happened, than that it happened at all.

And I thought Onischuk played a great tourney

Jan-08-11  Hovik2009: <Eyal>
Apart from Movsssian's modest results in this tourny with no loss, I am more encouraged about Armenia's national team with this new recruit, solid as he is by taking the 2nd board in team competitions, Armenia poses more solid and invincible than ever!

HeMateMe: I wonder why Moro isn't in the official picture for this event? I hope he doesn't go Bobby on us.

He's mr self-destruct on the march of the pigs.

tpstar: Well piggy, bashing Moro is heresy as he is closer to the top than most, yet bad events might be a ruiner of his career and an eraser of his elite status. He was once the becoming chess star, but perhaps the big man with a gun realized "I do not want this" and prefers a warm place like a reptile.

They only played 9 games. There are still two duplicates in the database which is why 4 players mistakenly have 10.

Jan-11-11  polarmis: Gashimov gave an extremely interesting account of how he won the tournament - not so much about pure chess as the sheer will to win!

Very good one !!!

In fact i've even forget that post and it's only today that i've reminded of it.

I was pretty sure that someone at least will get the refs.
