Jun-01-07  Hot Logic: I think Botswana could only score a point against China in a Hollywood movie, I think it was a pity that they didn't score anything though, I had hoped they could at least get half a point out of 36. In any case I'm glad they had a good time and hope Africa can be inspired by players such as Maurice Ashley and produce some great chess players.
Aug-26-07  percyblakeney: Botswana participated in the All-Africa Games that were finished last month, they ended up 4th of 6 teams, half a point ahead of Egypt but 7.5 from 3rd. None of the Botswana players won against a rated opponent, but they scored 4-0 against Libya.

Aug-26-07  DCP23: <percyblakeney> I've seen how the Botswanians blunder their Queens away right in the opening, so it's hard to imagine the level of chess the Libyans play.
Aug-26-07  percyblakeney: <DCP23> Sadly it was impossible to find the games, it would have been interesting to see how Botswana-Libya looked...

Sep-03-09  slomarko: there was some sort of scandal in the Russia-India match today, one player got forfeited.
Sep-03-09  percyblakeney: <one player got forfeited>

Gunina was late, and Russia lost against India 1.5-2.5. Other unexpected results: China with Hou Yifan lost 1-3 to Ukraine, while China B drew the Olympiad winning team from Georgia.

Sep-05-09  percyblakeney: Some of today's games:

Krush - Tatiana Kosintseva
Hou Yifan - Danielian
Mkrtchian - Zhao Xue
Chiburdanidze - Dronavalli
Rajlich - Ushenina

Sep-05-09  DCP23: <percyblakeney: Some of today's games>

Come on, <percy>. Nobody is interested in this event. CG.com couldn't even be bothered to create a page for it. I mean, really, who could possibly care for it? It's only a World Championship. Had it been a Florida Open for example, then of course it would have its own page for weeks in advance.

Sep-05-09  percyblakeney: <DCP23> It's only the fourth day since it was first mentioned in the support forum, so there's still hope :-)
Sep-05-09  DCP23: Not to mention the Russian Championship going into its 4th round right now. Apparently a tournament with over 40 strong GMs, of which about 30 are 2600+, just isn't worth noticing.

Open Defence: <Russia lost against India 1.5-2.5> Whoaa!! how did I miss that on the news here ??
Sep-06-09  percyblakeney: <Whoaa!! how did I miss that on the news here ??>

The World Championship for Teams ended up in the “maybe the games will be included in the twice a year update”-section but didn't get a page so it has been easy to miss it. Together with the Russian Championship that is so strong that a 2710 player like Motylev only is 20th at the moment. Always interesting to follow legends and future legends like Chiburdanidze and Hou, and I liked Mariya Muzychuk’s endgame against Ju in Ukraine's upset win against China:

Try putting this into an engine and see how much time it takes it to see that Muzychuk's 52. g4 is winning. :-) Much easier for a human but still an instructive finish: 52. g4 hxg4 53. h5 f5 54. h6 f4+ 55. Kf2 Kf6 56. b4 axb4 57. axb4 Kg6 58. c5 bxc5 59. bxc5 dxc5 60. d6 1-0

Open Defence: <Percy> for some reason the win over Russia did not find its way into the news here in India but our 3-1 loss to Georgia did...
Sep-06-09  percyblakeney: <Open Defence> Without Koneru it looks tough for India, but beating Russia was a very good result (helped a bit by Gunina's forfeit after being 60 seconds late). Prestige match today between Russia and China, and both teams need a win not to lose too much ground to Georgia and Poland.

Open Defence: yeah, I guess Chiburdanidze is carrying the Georgian flag high as usual...
Sep-06-09  DCP23: <Open Defence: <Percy> for some reason the win over Russia did not find its way into the news here in India but our 3-1 loss to Georgia did...>

Well there's a reason. As you maybe know by now, the India-Russia match was really a 1.5:1.5 plus +:- rather than simply 2.5:1.5.

Gunina was forfeited on the 4th board (in what would have surely been a win for her and thus a won match, as is evident from her other games and the other games of her opponent) according to the new, optional "zero-tolerance" rule.

Furthermore, there are two different witness accounts as to the amount of time Gunina was late for the game. According to her opponent, she was late for 1 minute (this is quoted by <percy> above). According to Evgeny Surov, a journalist now on site in Ningbo and who was actually present at the start of the round too, Gunina was late for exactly 2 seconds.

Open Defence: yes, but even the controversy did not make the news here.. the Indian sports press seems obsessed with cricket and believe it or not US Lingerie Bowl Football of all things
Sep-06-09  DCP23: <percyblakeney: (helped a bit by Gunina's forfeit after being 60 seconds late).>

I disagree strongly with that perspective. It wasn't 'helped a bit', it was only and solely because of that forfeit that the match was won, otherwise it would have been lost for India.

Gunina outclasses her opponent by a huge margin, has WON EACH AND EVERY GAME she played so far, and is in great form (just returned from winning the Moscow Blitz Championship), while her opponent LOST EACH AND EVERY GAME she played, all of them to much weaker players than Gunina.

Sep-06-09  DCP23: <Open Defence: the Indian sports press seems obsessed with cricket>

He-he... I personally never understood cricket but since my favorite player Peter Svidler is such a big fan of it, can't complain ;)

Sep-06-09  percyblakeney: China-Russia 2-2 (Hou won against Tatiana K. while Nadezhda K. won against Zhao Xue). Surprise win for Armenia against Georgia, so Poland will be in the lead after beating India but their remaining matches look tough: China, Georgia, Russia and Armenia.
Sep-06-09  slomarko: Poland smashed India 3-1
