In any case I'm glad they had a good time and hope Africa can be inspired by players such as Maurice Ashley and produce some great chess players. |

Together with the Russian Championship that is so strong that a 2710 player like Motylev only is 20th at the moment. Always interesting to follow legends and future legends like Chiburdanidze and Hou, and I liked Mariya Muzychuk’s endgame against Ju in Ukraine's upset win against China:

Prestige match today between Russia and China, and both teams need a win not to lose too much ground to Georgia and Poland. |

As you maybe know by now, the India-Russia match was really a 1.5:1.5 plus +:- rather than simply 2.5:1.5. Gunina was forfeited on the 4th board (in what would have surely been a win for her and thus a won match, as is evident from her other games and the other games of her opponent) according to the new, optional "zero-tolerance" rule. Furthermore, there are two different witness accounts as to the amount of time Gunina was late for the game. According to her opponent, she was late for 1 minute (this is quoted by <percy> above). According to Evgeny Surov, a journalist now on site in Ningbo and who was actually present at the start of the round too, Gunina was late for exactly 2 seconds. It wasn't 'helped a bit', it was only and solely because of that forfeit that the match was won, otherwise it would have been lost for India. Gunina outclasses her opponent by a huge margin, has WON EACH AND EVERY GAME she played so far, and is in great form (just returned from winning the Moscow Blitz Championship), while her opponent LOST EACH AND EVERY GAME she played, all of them to much weaker players than Gunina. |
