Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
St. Louis Rapid & Blitz (Rapid) (2017)

Played in Saint Louis, Missouri, USA 14-16 August, as part of the Grand Chess Tour 2017. The ten participants first played nine games of rapid chess (this page) then 18 games of blitz (see St. Louis Rapid & Blitz (Blitz) (2017)) for a total prize fund of $150,000. Garry Kasparov played for the first time since the Ultimate Blitz Challenge (2016). Levon Aronian won the rapid with 6/9. (1) Crosstable:

Combined with the blitz chess (St. Louis Rapid & Blitz (Blitz) (2017)), Aronian won the event with 24.5 points using the scoring system which weighted rapid games twice as much as blitz.

Aug-23-17  jith1207: <WorstPlayerEver:
Anyway, I guess cg offered me a premium account because I actually am willing to make relevant contributions. >

CG gave you premium account "in the hope" that you would make relevant contributions, not because you have shown any such willingness. I think it is fair to say that the decision is now regretted.

Aug-24-17  Sokrates: <Steve Skojec>. In the old folk tales, it was a metaphor of being despicable, when toads and lizzards came out of your mouth while speaking. During very little time here you have done your utmost to incarnate that metaphor, so off you go to the ignore list.
Aug-24-17  Absentee: I wonder if Steve Skojec knows that someone's posting on these pages using his name.
Aug-24-17  ChessHigherCat: Instead of having the computer system screen for 4-letter words, which few adults really care about, it should screen for "death to", all known derogatory racial/religious terms. Even posts with normal religious terms should go into a "suspicious" folder where they could be screened by a human since it's highly unlikely that the terms "Judaism" or "Islam" will be used in any way relevant to chess, although it may happen on occasion. Special rules could be adopted for the "anything-goes" forums since they are easily avoidable by anybody primarily interested in chess.
Aug-24-17  Sokrates: While I agree with your intentions, <ChessHigherCat>, I am not a fan of automatic filters. By Facebook, for instance, they seem to be terrified by the normal, natural, naked human body, while willingly accepting horrific pictures of individual victims of war and other atrocities.

What is missing here is simply a present moderation of the forum, a moderator deleting posts which clearly ignore/violate the posting guidelines. A moderator who clearly states what can be tolerated and what not.

I visit other forums (not chess-related) which execute that moderation and behold, people seem to have no problems sporting a decent tone. They seem to be capable of creating arguments rather than slanderings, addressing each other positively and politely instead of spitting insults and offensive names.

Yes, the people who call others "idiots" and proclame racism and fundamentalism will be excommunicated and banned, if they show no sign of "recovery". But who will miss them? Evidently, the moderator should show balanced tolerance and allow open and candid discussions, but we all know the fine line between expressing strong views on an issue and getting personal.

I know and fully understand, the good people of CG probably don't have the means to designate a full-time moderator to this forum, but for me it is without question that it would be the right thing to do.

Aug-24-17  ChessHigherCat: <Sokrates> I don't say everything has to be sweetness and light, and that might not even be the atmosphere most conducive to intellectual debate. The main thing is to prevent "agents provocateurs" and other trolls from making such derogatory statements for shock value, which could be done automatically to a large extent by filtering out posts with derogatory racial/religious terms.

As for human moderators, I don't share your optimism. They rarely follow what's going on and just react to the " whistleblowers" who pester them most, who are apt to be involved in the disputes themselves.

Aug-24-17  Sokrates: Hi, <ChessHigherCat> Again, I can only agree with the substance of your notion. On mods, as said, I have experienced some capable persons, who actually follow the discussions, but admittedly, there may be bad examples out there. Anyway, it would be nice to have a forum without the trash-talking.
Aug-25-17  WorstPlayerEver: Now wait, what about a ban for members who deliberately copy racist posts from trolls to Kenneth's?

With no other reason than creating a trollfest.

Usually I prefer a less radical approach for banning/censoring members, but I suppose this forum should at least have some members banned for a while who cross a given line.

I suppose this was the case...???

Aug-25-17  WorstPlayerEver: PS without political prejudices I mean. Racist/spam 1&2#
Aug-28-17  Steve Skojec: Hello there, Steve here.

Though my primary job is traditional Catholic apologetics, I do enjoy playing Internet chess from time to time.

Feel free to visit my website, One Peter Five (popularly known as 1P5) for traditional Catholic news and analysis at: http://onepeterfive.com

It is with great sorrow that I write the following words, and I ask for your patience and forbearance.

I have a wayward child whose privacy I shall protect here, though I have alluded to this sad fact on some of my blog posts at 1P5. Despite the best efforts of my wife and I, this child is determined not only to obstinately persist in certain sins, but to ridicule and oppose my work wherever possible.

Knowing that I play Internet chess from time to time, this child has taken the serious step of creating a false account in my name and posting inflammatory, un-Catholic and slanderous material using this account.

I sincerely apologize and ask forgiveness for any hurt my child has caused, and assure you that this will not ever happen again.

As for my own views, I am a traditional Catholic, affirming the unity of the entire human race (see Pope Pius XII, "Humani generis", 1950) - and I therefore reject and repudiate all forms of racism and theories of racial superiority.

Though I consider homosexual acts a grave and abominable sin (see St. Peter Damien, "Liber Gomorrhianus"), individual homosexuals must be treated charitably and shown the way to repent of their sins and return to Christ and His Church.

As regards other religions, while I completely reject the notion of any salvation outside Christ's Church (see Bl. Pope Pius IX, "Quanta Cura", 1864), I affirm that all those of other faiths should be evangelized in charity and truth, and not by compulsion, violence or abuse. For it is God's will "that all be saved, and come to the knowledge of the truth" (1 Tim. 2:4) - however, it is a sad fact that many voluntarily choose damnation.

Thank you for listening to me, and may the peace of Christ be with you.

tpstar: <Steve Skojec> Thank you very much for clarifying the situation. Best wishes to you and your family.

The old guard remembers this site before social media, with SJWs living in attack mode and going out of their way to be offended, but also before Premium Membership when the group had to get along in real time without Administrators around. I assure you that any "hurt" was minimal (even Greg Louganis and Nicolas Maduro ;>D) but your child follows the action here closely and is bound to return, when only the most experienced profilers will recognize them. Who remembers such things?

In the background, they are transitioning from a teaching site model ("You are encouraged to participate and learn from players stronger than yourself, while guiding those who are weaker") to becoming an historical site with full disclosure for all content. Eventually we can match up all of the work product here to the name and face behind it, which will solve many controversies right there. That is why elitist Historians are so determined to eradicate pragmatic Vandals as they are insanely jealous and desperate to be relevant, even though they don't pay attention and cannot figure things out in real time.

See you later. =)

Aug-28-17  Dr Winston OBoogie: <WorstPlayerEver: Now wait, what about a ban for members who deliberately copy racist posts from trolls to Kenneth's? With no other reason than creating a trollfest.>

In the absence of leadership America is going through a crisis unlike any other and so is this site. Believe me believe me.

Tipsy.

But you don't get a say in <anything> that happens on this site so why are you causing trouble.. <again!?>.

Aug-28-17  botvinnik64: So my question is: when does the FIDE WCC begin? Is it Saturday? Hope CG follows the top games and that we can all get back to the game we love. Peace to all!
Aug-28-17  botvinnik64: World Cup - to answer my own question - begins Saturday, 9/2, in Tbilisi, Georgia...Magnus is playing.
Sep-01-17  Steve Skojec: Dear <tpstar>, thank you very much for your gracious reply. God bless you.

<tpstar: <Steve Skojec> Blessed art thou.

Beware those satanic fish! ;>D>

Are you (plural?) carrying out both sides of this phony reactionary proselytizing dialog? I'm sure that guy just hijacked the name of the real SK (who's probably a racist holy roller, too) and you're legitimizing him by responding (unless you're playing both roles, of course).

Speaking of satanic fish, cute little moray eel you've got there!

And, most importantly for your salvation, remember: Watch out where the huskies go and don't you eat that yellow snow!

Sep-03-17  Big Pawn: I'm not buying <steve skojec's> baloney here. He said his wayward son came on here, logged under his login (how did he get his login creds?) and went around trolling. The problem is that that version of <steve skojec> was intimately familiar with all of the history of many old threads on this site, as well as the quirks of each poster he made reference to.

How did that happen?

Are we to believe that <steve skojec> has a son who is a regular member of this site and regularly engages in trolling activity with us all, following carefully all the conversations on <rogoff>, <wesley so> and others, and then, he logs off and logs back on under his father's name, for no reason?

Not buying it.

Sep-03-17  Big Pawn: <Steve Skojec: Dear <tpstar>, thank you very much for your gracious reply. God bless you.>

What a phony!

"God bless you."

Blow it out your ear!

Jul-30-18  1d410: My favorite tournament...
Jul-30-18  ChessHigherCat: People are talking about Aronian like he's history now but this was only last year. I'm sure he can bounce back.
