HeMateMe: Thanks, interesting film. I always found the closer you could jam in your pawns and extra pieces (so the checks couldn't be blocked) the better were you're winning chances. I played a lot of this in high school and college.
Sep-04-11  Octavia: <Congrats to Anand for a spectacular result and tourney win.
Sep-04-11  arieszodiac: I think the buttom line there is that MC is not in his form as what <sevenseaman> said
Sep-05-11  yalie: Hey! Soccer scoring - Vishy scores 12 points, Carlsen 3 :)

Personally I thought Vishy was the most solid, Aronian the most creative, Kramnik the best prepared and Carlsen the most unlucky.

That said trying b5 against Kramnik? - is he turning into a Nakamura from 5 years ago? Such things will work in Biel or Bazna, but not against the top 5 (which is what Kramnik said by "at this level").

Sep-05-11  APatzer: Congrats to Anand on the memorial win !
Sep-05-11  Comandente: If I would play classical chess at the Anand's rapid level, what do you guys think would be my classical elo?
Sep-05-11  Akavall: http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...

I wonder how teams for mixed doubles were determined. Were pairs determined by the players nationalities i.e, two player with the same nationality made a team if it was possible? Or was 1st place in men's section paired with 4th in women's; 2nd in men's with 3rd in women's, and so on. The later method seems much easier, and perhaps most fair, as it intends to have most balance teams. If it was indeed the method, it is interesting that both Russian, both Indian, and both Armenian players got paired with each other.

Sep-05-11  polarmis: <Akavall>, they'd decided the pairings months in advance based on nationality. Carlsen and Cmilyte became the "European" team as there wasn't a Norwegian alternative - and as Carlsen mentioned afterwards he knows Cmilyte well as she's Peter Heine Nielsen's girlfriend.
Sep-05-11  Akavall: <polarmis> Thanks. Then it's still interesting that the teams ended up being balanced the way the did (1st and 4th, 2nd and 3rd, and so on). Who would've thought that Cmilyte would be 1st and Carlsen 4th!
Sep-06-11  M.D. Wilson: Good tournament for Anand. Carlsen can't be expect to play perfect chess and win all the time; give him a break, he's still the highest rated player in the world. Too many armchair GMs on this site.
Sep-06-11  Bluegrey: <Commandente> Atleast 2700+
Sep-06-11  voyager39: Since we don't have rapid ratings there is no choice other then to use classical ratings to decide the strength of the tournament and these are the top 4. If that's not convincing enough...have a look at the historical results in some famous Rapid tournaments and count how many times these 4 names figure in the winners column:-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amber_... http://www.chessvibes.com/reports/m...

For Mainz its 12 out of 15 years and for Amber its 15 out of 19.

Botvinik undoubtedly was an exceptionally strong tournament if not the strongest ever.

kingfu: We play a Botvinnik Tournament without one French?

I need a vacation.

Sep-06-11  Kanatahodets: Even though I am a Magnus fan I wasn't dissapointed at all by his loss. The tournament has potential for being the prototype of the real WC. Say these four guys play micromatches with each other: 4 games, 12 in total. The winner is the undisputed World Champion. If they could get together for this toy tournament, they can do it for the title. One thing left - to convince Vichy to join the fest. After his win at Moscow he will be glad to join the WC tournament. That was the real goal of Magnus - he lost three games and let Vishy to win so that next time all these guys will be happy to play a la AMRO torunament. He is a cunning old buddy this Magnus:)
Sep-06-11  Psihadal: Where do these people like <Kanatahodets> come from?
Sep-06-11  JoergWalter: @ Psidahal

ask <shach matov> he is the expert on geography.

Sep-06-11  Kanatahodets: <Psihadal: Where do these people like <Kanatahodets> come from?> Clearly from Russia with love:)
Sep-06-11  Kanatahodets: Clearly I was joking but this guy took it seriously. I'm stunned...
Sep-06-11  Kanatahodets: <JoergWalter> Are you from East Germany? Just curious.
Sep-06-11  JoergWalter: @ kanatahodets

no, but how did you get the impression?

Sep-06-11  Kanatahodets: The name Joerg Walter is certainly German. Then I was thinking, maybe you are in friendly relations with psihadal who likes Paul Van Dyk who is from Eisenhüttenstadt, East Germany. That's it.
Sep-08-11  voyager39: WhyChess is running a survey "Do you think it’s necessary to introduce ratings for rapid and blitz?"

Anand in a 2005 interview commented "If all my rapid games were actually rated, even with a less weightage, I would be somewhere closer to 3000!"

http://www.rediff.com/sports/2005/a...

Anand was christened as "the Lightning Kid" long long ago and his Rapid/Blitz/Chess 360 record is even better than his classical!

The question is, how palatable that 3000 rating would be, particularly to rating fans?

Dec-12-11  Aaronsky: Carlsen is the best player in the world today after Kasparov, allowing for Kasparov's retirement form.

Kramnik is an arrogant person who will never be as good as Carlsen or Kasparov.

Ratings don't lie.

Dec-12-11  M.D. Wilson: Aaronsky, what are you smoking?
Jul-08-12  SetNoEscapeOn: Not what I am, that's for sure.
