OhioChessFan: A very amicable game on our side. Congratulations to Black for a well played game.

Can anyone tell me what FRC number I should plug into my Fritz on the 960 program?

Sep-07-09  dalbertz: Thanks for the game, everyone. Good job!
Sep-07-09  ronpaz1: thanks for team White for the good fight!
we had to stretch our chess abilities for the maximum to achieve the draw!
Sep-08-09  blue wave: Thanks to all for the enjoyable game. Look forward to the next one.
Sep-08-09  imag: Thanks for the game everyone!

Team White did a very good job of making us defending the entire game.

Team Black did a very good job of drawing this one.

I briefly analyzed the game and it seems that there are two particular moves that Rybka does not like:

36...Qd4 was bad, better was 36...Qa4 or 36...d4

but then Team White returned the favor, 37.g3 was much better than 37.Qg3.

I can post the entire analysis if you are interested.

OhioChessFan: Fritz rates g3 at 1.17 at 21 plies while 37. g3 evals drop to 0.00 immediately. I'm not real convinced of that, but someone with Rybka3 might have a look.
Sep-08-09  imag: In general, I think that playing e5 was a positional error, White got a wonderfully posted knight on d4 and an open diagonal towards Black kingside.

White's play in the opening and early middlegame was nearly flawless. The position after our 26...Qxd6 seems critical, there might be White improvements in this phase of the game.

OhioChessFan: <imag> I think c6 was a disaster and was the real source of Black's early problems.
Sep-08-09  benjinathan: Thank you Team White. I also thought that the opening position favoured white. And that Black's opening play increased the white advantage.
Sep-08-09  YouRang: I would be most interested in a deep Rybka analysis of white's 22nd move. That move was decided by one vote. I personnaly think we went the wrong way there (I preferred 22.Rde1).

I'll put my computer on it today, but neither my computer nor my software (Rybka 2.2) is tops.

Sep-08-09  YouRang: <OhioChessFan: <imag> I think c6 was a disaster and was the real source of Black's early problems.> I don't know. I think 1.c4 was a good opening, and that we were well prepared for any reasonable black reply -- except for 1...c6.

I think we (white) did a good job of bottling up black in the opening, and we got a fine position. But somewhere we let the cat out of the bag (or we never quite had the cat completely in the bag -- it was a pretty uncooperative cat).

Sep-08-09  YouRang: Perusing the commentary, this is my favorite black post so far:

<Apr-07 Dmaster995: I think this game will be resignable very shortly. We have almost no counterplay, and our position is garbage. Our analysis seems to produce nothing good. What a shame it is to see this game go down the tubes after just 3 moves.>

At least we managed to create a little dispair in the black camp. ;-)

al wazir: <OhioChessFan: I think c6 was a disaster and was the real source of Black's early problems.> Agreed. I hated that move from the get-go.

<imag: ... there are two particular moves that Rybka does not like: 36...Qd4 was bad, better was 36...Qa4 or 36...d4 ...> As I recall, 36...Qd4 was my suggestion (7/28, p. 152) -- the contribution I was proudest of.

<YouRang: ... At least we managed to create a little dispair in the black camp.> More than a little.

Sep-08-09  popski: Thank you for the good game guys, but once again, it was pleasure to be in the white's team! Really nice, friendly and constructive team! The best so far!
Sep-08-09  blue wave: Very Funny comments to read! pg 121 of Team Black made me laugh a lot. I must admit, the endgame is not my strength, but it was interesting to follow. Great game. Thanks for tough fight from team black.
Sep-08-09  blue wave: Just read all the pages, and now am in trouble with my wife for staying up late! Doh!
Sep-08-09  whatthefat: Great game everyone. Thank you to both my teammates for producing loads of excellent analysis, and to our opponents for a game well played. I have to say I really enjoyed this format, and would rank it alongside the first team game (before computer analysis completely took over), and the world games in terms of satisfaction. Best of all, this game opened my eyes to the wonderful world of FRC; untangling problems from the very first move was thoroughly refreshing.
Sep-08-09  YouRang: <whatthefat> I agree about the FRC setup. It seems we got directly into playing chess by bypassing all the opening theory.

Of course I like that because I'm rather stupid when it comes to opening theory.

But I would like to thank all my teammates on the white side for the very positive experience. Too bad we couldn't quite convert the 1-0, but it was a good (and enjoyable) try.

Sep-08-09  YouRang: My vote for black's best move would be <22...f5!>.

It looked so ugly that we never gave it much consideration. But I believe that it turned out to be black's most stubborn defense.

Sep-08-09  whatthefat: By the way, if someone puts together a detailed set of computer aided annotations, it will be greatly appreciated. For one thing, I'd be interested to see what the engines make of <Gypsy>'s alternative plan of 12.Be1.
Sep-08-09  ganstaman: GG all.

<imag: In general, I think that playing e5 was a positional error>

Agreed, even though I disagreed at first glance. It's a little sad that we couldn't change the vote fast enough and ended up losing the vote to the random tie-breaker. It's nice to have survived it anyway.

OhioChessFan: With a little prodding, Fritz has decided that 37. g3 is also a draw.

Black's best move for my money was 8...Be7

OhioChessFan: Thanks especially to <YouRang> who was the most consistent analyst on our side. I won't even mention I think he's dead wrong about f5. ;)
Sep-08-09  YouRang: Well, thanks <OhioChessFan> for the unexpected complement. You do realize, I hope, that "consistent" isn't really synonymous with "verbose".

And about f5, I don't quite know what you mean. I've always treated that square as I would any other. :-)

Sep-08-09  YouRang: <Can anyone tell me what FRC number I should plug into my Fritz on the 960 program?>

Try 216.
