Jul-29-08  Whitehat1963: I'm shocked that GJT has played this through move 60. What are the odds he'll go past move 65 or 70?

Sounds like a future bet for the Chessbookie.

Thanks. Not having tablebases is a real handicap at this point in the game.

Jul-29-08  zanshin: <MAJ> (or any other tablebase user) If I go to this link: http://kirill-kryukov.com/chess/tab...

Which tablebases should I download that will be most relevant to this game?

Jul-29-08  stukkenjager: Quickest mate or quickest tablebase entry? Reaching a tablebase position, that is a position with 6 pieces or less , is totally irrelevant. Chess is all about finding the shortes way to checkmate.

Whether or not we play it, last night's Rxa5 analysis was excellent teamwork.

To reach tablebases we need to exchange pieces. And if we exchange pieces we get closer to mate. So the quickest way to mate is to reach a tablebase position :-)

Jul-29-08  hms123: <z> certainly the 3/4/5-man TBs. I also have the 6-man without pawns (it doesn't take up much room and downloaded quickly). I believe that the 6-man with pawns is around 1 terabyte by itself. I am sure that others know more about this, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night! :-) (For those not in the US, this is a line from a TV commercial that seems to be on all of the time.)

Actually, I'd want to go for the quickest tablebase entry. At that point, there is no denying the end result, and so I feel it would bring about a quicker resignation. Also, at that point there is a much reduced chance (relative chance, I guess) of us making a mistake. Entering the tablebase is the same thing as ending the game, in my eyes, so that's where I'd aim.

Jul-29-08  zanshin: <howard> Thanks. I think I'll try for the 3/4/5 first.

I think he was discussing the difference between mating on the 83rd move with Rxh5 (which delays tablebase entry) or mating on the 86th move with Rxa5 (which enters the tablebase more quickly). I would prefer a quicker mate, and my vote will reflect that. With such strong players on our team, we are not going to blunder because we don't immediately enter a tablebase ending.

I believe chess is all about making sure you don't lose ;-)

The tablebase wins are diffent number of moves to mate depebding on a number of factors. Sometimes for example a lone rook is faster than queen versus knight. Sometimes delaying tablebase entry speeds up the mate. Tablebases are no reason to stop thinking.
