Tabanus: Game Collection: Norwegian Championship 1920 and Game Collection: Norwegian Championship 1921. The newspapers have lots of games but not from the NOR Ch's. Reti, Spielmann, Nimzowitsch, matches, club games, etc.
US visitor Bjarne Jensen, any other games?
May-20-24  BarakSaltz: Try the search queries "jensen hvit" and "jensen svart".
May-20-24  BarakSaltz: "bj. jensen" and "parti no." are also useful search terms.
May-20-24  SecretSanta: <jnpope> I've posted some more John Morphy games in the comments on his page - if anyone's interested.

mifralu: Can anyone provide information on who is behind the pseudonym <'Aga'>? He was active in Prague, e.g. in a consultation game with Moritz Porges vs. Carl Schlechter in 1901.

jnpope: <Deutsche Schachzeitung>, July 1901, p210 gives a game, Porges v. "Aga", stated to have been played on April 4/5 in the last tournament of the Prague Chess Club. The source appears to be the <Bohemia> newspaper. Perhaps a solution can be found in that paper or clue deduced from a cross table of that tournament?

Tabanus: https://www.nb.no/items/678d4851a3e... has a Lasker simul game on page 10, a loss to Bjarne Jensen.

jnpope: 12th Norway Chess (2024) will appear to require a results table and a scoring table once it is over.

Tabanus: Mr. Edwards, http://www.edochess.ca/players/p192..., should be Herman Gunnerius Hansen.

Btw I added Nordic Championship (1928) today, all the 10 games are new to CG.

jnpope: Perhaps the CG standings table for 12th Norway Chess (2024) should be de-activated until after the event and then manually populated?
May-31-24  BarakSaltz: Phony Benoni compiled a lot of games easy to copy and paste into the PGN upload form. Are there guidelines regarding marking off such games once they get entered into the main database?

Tabanus: Nordic Championship (1897), incl. id of Teodor Torbiornsson.

ChessBase Big Database 2006 has the wrong Svensson, and wrong Mellgren too. And so has https://www.365chess.com/tournament....

May-31-24  Petrosianic: This is an offbeat question, but in a Star Trek episode called Charlie X, Kirk and Spock are playing chess. Spock gives check, and Kirk responds with checkmate.

Obviously Kirk's move was Discovered Checkmate. But can anybody think of a game in this database where that same situation occurred (discovered mate in reply to a check)?

May-31-24  Petrosianic: It would be easy enough to construct such a position. For example:

click for larger view

1... R-R3ch 2. B-N6 discovered mate.

I just don't remember ever seeing such a thing in actual play.

May-31-24  BarakSaltz: Phony Benoni's "game collections" include many games presented in text not in the main "Chessgames" database. If the text games got entered into the "Chessgames" database, it could be useful to have the Phony Benoni "game collection" presentation be adjusted accordingly.

jnpope: <BarakSaltz>, the easiest way would be to clone the collection and then work from the copy. Then you can remove games after they are submitted. When that collection is "emptied" you can delete the empty collection and clone another and begin the cycle once more.
May-31-24  BarakSaltz: Imaginably, it is permitted to copy and paste games from Phony Benoni collections and enter them into the main database. The concern with that is that some readers might think the games not marked in the Phony Benoni collections with "Chessgames" individual game links have not been entered yet, even if entered. When using PGN upload, it is wise to double-check whether the game one is entering is already in the "Chessgames" main database.

Tabanus: Nordic Championship (1899), alles klar?

Pls check the xtab, is it as agreed? The CG table is heavily edited since I included also Täckholm's cancelled games.

jnpope: The totals look correct, both horizontally and vertically, so assuming the game results match the table entries it appears to be a good table.

Stonehenge: CG should really do something with those yellow pencils indicating annotation.

Stuff like <Black resigned after a few moves> and <Time> is NO annotation.

jnpope: I agree. At the very least a check to see if the only "annotation" is on the last move could be done by software.
