Kibitzer's Corner
Jun-26-05  Knight13: He lived for only a short period of time. That's sad. He died in an age of 39. :( He was a great player, too.

Mar-18-06  DeepBlade: as you can see in this game
Hanstein vs Von Der Lasa, 1839
Aug-13-07  brankat: Mr.Hanstein must have been very selective when choosing his opponents :-) A good page to study KGA though.
Aug-13-07  whiteshark: Imagine the historical context:

- Who was playing chess at that time ?
- I guess Paris was the only chess center than ..
- Known theory or chess literature at that time ? Tend to be zero.

- Information transfer ?
- Strong players ?
- Tournaments/Matches ?

= Berlin around 1840: A desert for playing chess.

Aug-13-07  waddayaplay: I think it is funny to say he was of IM strength. Difficult to compare like that.
Aug-03-08  artyom2008: happy birthday dude
Feb-06-09  Eastfrisian: Wilhelm Hanstein was a cousin to Carl Mayet, another player of the Berlin "plejades".
Feb-06-09  Karpova: <whiteshark: = Berlin around 1840: A desert for playing chess.>

No, Berlin was definitely not <a desert for playing chess> just because important players like Julius Mendheim are largely forgotten now. And what about Dr. Ludwig Bledow, Paul Rudolf von Bilguer and Bernhard Horwitz ? I'd say that it was quite the opposite of a desert with the German chess scene developping and growing. It's more like a meadow at springtime.

Feb-06-09  whiteshark: <K> Hehe, you took my conclusion from its context.

Maybe we see the situation just from a different angle?

:D

Feb-06-09  Karpova: <whiteshark>
Or I'm simply disagreeing with your premises and your conclusion.
Feb-06-09  whiteshark: o.k., maybe my information were 'incomplete'...

I just found this lively description: http://www.lasker-gesellschaft.de/f...

Aug-03-10  eightsquare: Happy Birthday!!
Apr-15-19  Atking: I would not evaluate this player is of IM strength. Let say he did pretty well in his match with Von der Lasa who did well against Staunton... How one can say the latter is of MI strength?
