PETER HEINE NIELSEN
(born May-24-1973, 51 years old) Denmark

[what is this?]

Nielsen became a Grandmaster in 1994 and is Denmark's top player. By September 2005 his ELO rating was 2668, the highest rated GM from the Nordic countries. In 2007, he worked as a second to World Chess Champion GM Viswanathan Anand. Nielsen qualified for the World Cup (2011) as a nominee of the FIDE President, and won his first three rounds against Israeli GM Evgeny Postny, English GM Michael Adams and Romanian GM Mircea-Emilian Parligras to face Vugar Gashimov in round four; he lost the first game to Gashimov but fought back to take the second and force the match to a tiebreaker, his fourth of the contest, however Gashimov prevailed in the second set of rapid-play (10+10) tiebreakers. In 2013 he joined Magnus Carlsen team to assist Carlsen, commencing with the World Championship Candidates (2013) in March, however, he did not assist Carlsen against Anand due to his previous association as Anand's second. He is also a FIDE Senior Trainer (2016).

Co-author with Carsten Hansen of <The Sicilian Accelerated Dragon: Improve Your Results with New Ideas in This Dynamic Opening>.

He married Lithuanian GM Viktorija Cmilyte in December 2013.

alexmagnus: <They sometimes reveals a lack precise knowledge.>

Nothing comparable with a <Moldavian> chess site which instead of the news of <GM Bologan reaching round 2 of the World Cup> wrote about <IM Bologan reaching round 2 of the Moldavia Cup>. It didn't bother the news agency that the "Moldavia Cup" was held in Russia and the opponent in round 1 was a Pole (both being mentioned in the news message, though the name of the Pole was written wrong). The message ended with a mysterious sentence "playing with black chesses (!), our sportsman will compete in round 2".

I think it is safe to say Peter Heine is a tad busy, yes.

Troller: Peter is in the lead in a rather overlooked round robin in Barcelona:

Live games are available on the homepage as well.

Feb-01-13  Naniwazu: Peter has stopped working for Anand and is currently coaching Magnus Carlsen.
Apr-07-13  Albertan: Peter Heine Nielsen won't work for Magnus Carlsen: Vishwanathan Anand

Apr-17-13  Chessinfinite: Peter Heine Nielsen is one of the best trainer/ coach/ seconds any player in the World can have today. Anand knows this, and so does Carlsen. Absolutely the 'winning edge' in preparation imo to have him in the team.

I think Anand will be thankful to Peter Heine Neilsen for his great help in his preparatory work. Good luck to PHN on his next venture with Carlsen.

May-24-13  JPi: <The player of the day> for many Japanese players. We were please to met not only a strong GM but also a man of a great simplicity. Both frank and subtle. In the name of a lot Japanese chess players Happy Birthday Heine Peter!
May-24-13  Appaz: What a nice tribute, <JPi> and I can only testify to your kind words.

I guess this Danish giant was both "frank and subtle" except in his physical presence :)

May-25-13  JPi: Well <Appaz> to be frank but not as subtle as our friend; as matter of -little- fa(c)t, alas, I'm not in position to argue.
Mar-30-14  Jigsaw42: I hope it's the last time this Carlsen biased c--t comments on a major tournament. And seriously, what's up with his grammar?
Mar-30-14  NGambit: Enjoyed having PH do the commentary during the candidates. Hope to see him in many more important events. As he (probably) won't be helping Magnus in the November match, I hope the organizers invite him. Svidler and PH combo would be awesome!
Mar-30-14  RedShield: Yes, I wonder if Nielsen's noble gesture in refusing to work for Magnus against Vishy holds for the rematch. Principles are nice, but business is business.
Mar-30-14  waustad: From one thing he said to Anna Bertsova today, I suspect that he will work with Carlsen this time. I don't recall the exact wording, but I got the impression that enough time had passed that it was no longer an issue. He mentioned Peter Leko working for both Anand and Kramnik, among others.
Mar-30-14  Shams: <Jigsaw42> <I hope it's the last time this Carlsen biased c--t comments on a major tournament. And seriously, what's up with his grammar?>

I'm guessing his English is a million times better than your Danish.

Mar-30-14  Chess for life: I thought GM Nielsen and his wife did a fine job commenting. However, GM Nielsen used "to a certain extent" and "in some sense" way too often. He also often ended many sentences with "but...", without following up with anything. I wish he was more assertive and sure of himself in his comments.
Mar-30-14  waustad: From the point of view of someone whose second and third languages are dramatically worse than most European's second or third, I was very happy with the performance of both commentators. His interchanges with VC were interesting. Two GMs who know each other as well as one can seeing different things was elucidating.

As an aside, here and in post mortems there seem to be those who have no qualms about interrupting others and those who need a cattle prod to be convinced to speak. Carlsen is naturally of the Bjorn Borg, cattle prod variety so sometimes he doesn't really know how to act. He's expected to talk so he does, but probably would rather not.

Jun-15-14  mucher1: This guy reached 2700 and was a pretty active tournament player up until 2011/12, but nowadays seems to have retired from competitive chess (except for the occasional Bundesliga match). Perhaps it pays better to train #1 than to be #50-100, but still...
