Jul-13-04  siggemannen: I wonder how chessgames pick the Player Of The Day
Jul-30-04  Carballo: Well, for one thing, they've proved prophetic this time. Julen Arizmendi has now become the first Valencian GM. And rightly so: Congratulations!!!
Jul-30-04  meloncio: <Carballo> Valencian? I thought he was Basque because has a typical name.

Y por cierto, ¿qué tal por Glasgow? :-D

Jul-30-04  Carballo: <meloncio> As a matter of fact, he was born in the United States, of Basque (hence his name) and Cuban descent. But he hails from Valencia. Some years ago, we were in the same club (but, mind you, not in the same league! ;)

Next time in English ...

Dec-25-04  Backward Development: he is one of the co-authors of the new book
'mastering the najdorf.'

Richard Taylor: I was talking to him about the game Topalov-Svidler in the Najdorf (English attack) in which Topalov sacrificed on f3 and so on - neither of us could reconstruct it in the time - he was very nice fellow and his a talk about a game of Topalov's versus Bacrot was interesting. Very thoughtful and helpful.

Benzol: Apparently he pops by and looks at this site every so often (doesn't kibitz though). I enjoyed his lecture and he seems a very personable young man.

Dec-31-09  waustad: Everything I see sounds like he is Spanish, but it says he was born in the US. Were his parents in the US as diplomats or something? The other way around I would guess that he's military brat, but i don't think the Spanish have bases on what is US Territory this century.

Benzol: Pleasing to see this man as player of the day.
Dec-31-09  Shajmaty: <waustad: Everything I see sounds like he is Spanish, but it says he was born in the US.> I believe he was born in Valencia (Spain), but lived some years in the USA.

His favourite tournaments are Biel 2002 (his first GM norm) and San Sebastián (teams, where he draw Gelfand, Mamedyarov and Aronian).

Richard Taylor: He didn't have any accent - he sounded like an American. Good lecture he gave.

Dec-31-12  Kikoman: Player of the Day again :O
Apr-02-15  Conrad93: This guy is an amazing Sicilian player...
Jul-17-18  reti: Honeymoon? Great. I knew him when he was 15 years old in the U.S.
Jul-05-20  ELCABALLO238: Happy Birthday Julen! I played Julen back in 1993 when he was 16 and already a strong Master, at the Marshall Chess Club Championship. I was Black in an exchange French, somehow I found a Knight sacrifice that won that game. Julen got his revenge a few months later in another tournament at the MCC. Again I was Black, this time in an e6 Sicilian and after a long struggle he totally outplayed me in the endgame. He used to come to the MCC accompanied by his tutor, the Cuban master Roberto Rodriguez from New Jersey, USA. Julen is of Spanish-Cuban descent like me. Viva Espana y Cuba Julen!!!
